score-O Lac Beauchamp

29, 7, 6, 5, 1, 3, 2, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 12, 18, 19, 23, 24, 25, 27, 15, 16

For the first time, I was so far out of the running for summer solistice series awards, I decided to get my money's worth and run late: clear the map and get in a long training run for the Boilermaker. However, after being unable to find one of my required controls (#26) and then having a face plant en route to #27, I quit and began incomplete journey to the finish. Along the way to the finish, I also gave up a search for #14.

Without carrying a compass and without taking a bearing off the sun before the start, my navigation was sloppy. For the most part, I used controls as attackpoints for next control. Towards #1, I drifted about 100m left. I did the same headed for #2 and ended up at #3. And then drifted left again heading back to #2. I must have really had the sun bearing wrong.

Coming in to #8, I spotted the runner leaving (rather than bother with control description). I later learned that the runner was Qi and she said hi but I ignored her, how sad!

At #19, I decided to go for closer #23 and (handicap) pass on #20 and #21. That could have been a good last-minute decision because there was controversy surrounding control #21. The swamp crossing from #24 to #25 was awesome deep. After failing to find #26, I backed up toward #25 and took the N trail toward #27 and fell flat in the white forest. I may not have fallen in poison ivy but I have lots of sore muscles 24h later.

Those muscles haven't been used in some time.

Corey seemed too well at the play.on tournament. I've seen that he's officially registered for the 15k so it's time to pull out all stops.

Corey has let me know that he's running the Boilermaker. However, he's not registered yet. Even so, that's enough motivation for me. It's time to break in the shoes, count the calories, take the shark cartilage and do some physio. The fact that he's still recovering from a broken ankle (and broke his nose Thursday) only adds to the motivation. How slow will he run?!?

Running 30:00 [3] 4.31 km (6:58 / km) +6m 6:55 / km

This is my first run in Nike in many years. I'm not certain they can be ready in time for the Boilermaker. It's also the first time (probably ever) where I've taken the shoes out of the box and run in them. It's not a nice thing to do to your feet but then I don't exactly have a lot to lose any more.

The stitching on the outside outer of my left shoe is already coming apart on these relatively new off-road shoes.

That's it. I found only seven controls and was still late. I can't blame the rain though I may finally try wearing glasses for the first time next week. This is one of those rare times that reviewing the map and my route choices was just not possible. For me, all controls except 1-4 felt like bingo controls.

First four controls were fast and straightforward, too much time was spent finding #7, then even more time finding #8 and even more time finding #9. All of the controls seemed farther from the trail than map portrayed. By #9 I was really frustrated. Apparently, I was not the one frustrated. I wandered around (hopelessly) for #6 and then #5 and eventually wandered 500m NW of controls. I didn't get to see the bears but I had a lovely long run back to the finish.

Danielle broke her glasses, found only three controls, got stuck in swamp between controls #15 and #1 and still enjoyed herself. That's especially good since she'll have more points than me in the handicap scoring.

Despite being on this map so often, we have lots of concerns with the quality of the map. Richard & I may have lots of trouble, having chosen this map for our event on 19 August.

I had so many in and out legs I doubt that I chose most effective. Even with my 2 handicap, I was six controls short of completion. Subtracting errors during those route choices, the best that I could have done was two more controls. This was my first time wearing analog watch in decades. Thank you Mickey Mouse.

20 as with many times before on this feature, I somehow ended up on trail 60m S of control.
19 went over land and spiked
11 Eric & I both drifted N
17 It's good thing fence was uncrossable. Not reading control descriptions I would have gone to wrong side of fence at control.
15 S of buildings
10 trails and road
2 messed up as I didn't expect it on private property
8 I actually found trail going from 28 w/ no compass or sun bearing
14 Mickey Mouse told me I was out of time and I ran back to Slack and along roads. Qi later told me I could have stayed on trail and used path in residential area like I did. This was yet another example of failing vision.

Vincent Massey Park score-O

4, 2, 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 11, 13, 14, 18, 21, 23, 20, 19, 17, 16, 15, 9

I let Qi use my watch. This was her first ever score-O.

Running with no watch, I decided to simply clear the map, no time pressure. Being a shortened (45 minute) event, my late penalty was significant. I wondered about for my first control (#4) and had to wait on late arrivals because I ran right past the cardboard flag too small to see. Coming out of #4 we were all burned by stinging nettles, even through my pants. I stalled short of both #2 and #1. The rest was straightforward running in the heat until #15 where two of us ran round and round the trails 'til we found the correct one. Without control #15, my pace should have been well under 10min/km.

It's a good thing I knew the map because it now seems too small to read, my eyes?
