Note

Four weeks after contact with poison ivy in Vermont, I think I'll mark myself recovered. The original under-right-forearm contact is now an itchy burn scar. It may stay that way for a long time yet. I may also end up with similar scars on my right front torso. The new (Ottawa-based) contact from my score-O control clean-up has run the more typical seven day course, despite impact on some rather sensitive body parts.

I ran the Monk Enviornmental Park to escape some of the 31 Humidex. My poison ivy forearm scar still itches and now I've a new batch of poison ivy probably from control pickup on Tuesday: forehead and other places (not to be named).

orienteering (Beaverbrook North) 36:00 [3] *** 3.6 km (10:00 / km)

Even long after midnight the humidex was still 29. I picked up controls by headlamp. The other controls were gathered with my son (using automobile) when we still had twilight to work with.

orienteering race (McCarthy Woods) 57:58 [4] *** 4.72 km (12:17 / km)
17c shoes: The North Face Ultra 106 GTX X

Wet leaves everywhere did a great job of cleaning my forearm of infection. I was too pressured by the 50 minute countdown and ran right by controls 11 and 8.

54.9% w/ handicap
9, 10, 11fail, 12, 13, 21, 24, 16, 22, 20, 23, 19, 17, 15, 14, 8fail, 2, 3, 6

I ran right over 8 and eventually hit railroad and get stuck in green, coming out somewhere between 7 and 5, what a mess I made of yet another race.
8 PM

orienteering 43:00 [3] *** 2.7 km (15:56 / km)
7c shoes: The North Face Ultra 106 GTX X

Control pick up was humbling as I was assigned two controls that I couldn't find. I really had run right by them so my navigation was not that bad after all.

I was happy to gather all the controls and other gear to take home and then straight on to my meet next week.

I saw doctor (actually my doctor's doctor-in-training) who, like myself, can provide no explanation for the poison ivy spots all over my torso. He also provided no guidance on dealing with it. Aside from some Fucidin for the superficial infection surrounding the original contact spot under my forearm, there's nothing to be done?

Having just walked Kyle through the tutorial map, I attacked this course with false confidence, screwing up the first three controls.

orienteering 26:48 [4] **** 1.3 km (20:37 / km)
17c shoes: The North Face Ultra 106 GTX X

Blind-O: no map information (aside from perimeter fencing), only lines between target circles. This was a great compass test and I failed. Between controls 4 and 5, I did three extra controls I would then repeat as controls 12 through 15. I drifted both left and right of various targets. The pinickers had to direct me control 14 on the river bank. Can I blame the mid-day heat?

Running 42:19 intensity: (2:56 @1) + (39:23 @3) 5.2 km (8:08 / km)
shoes: The North Face Ultra 106 GTX X

I went to the track to run a ladder, seeking some endorphins to mask the poison ivy pain. I started slow but only got slower. Apparently my body is under attack. Poison ivy is winning so far.

Note

I know that I might forget from season to season but I suspect that this is my worst bout of poison ivy. Seven days after reaching for a geocache in Vermont, my right arm blisters are still seeping.

orienteering race (Timm Drive South) 47:00 [3] *** 3.56 km (13:12 / km)
12c shoes: The North Face Ultra 106 GTX X

I started after everyone else and came in before everyone else because I was really there to take in the behind-the-scenes management that I will be doing myself in three weeks.

72, 71, 68, 67, 66, 65, 62, 61, 63, 64, 69, 70
48%
(44.2% w/ handicap but recorder missed one of my punches. Just once, I'd like to get through an Ottawa summer score-O season without having to contest the results.)

I can see that Liran is having the same difficulty: how to print control codes AND control numbers on a control card without writing them by hand?

I started looking for 71 way too early. I so overshot 62 that I was over fence and through the green. I had no problem getting to 69 but then I know these woods. However, I came out to trail just east of 70 and ran all the way down the trail before realizing I'd have to backtrack.

Ziggy & I took advantage of the cool, rainy weather (12°). Even so, the summer growth was evident as the heavy green branches tried to cover the trail. I got many leaves in the face. Most of our run was done untethered. Distance covered is a guess. I forgot the GPSr.
