After getting my usual overrunning out of my system, I encountered something unexpected. Legs 4, 5 and 6 required racers to cross steep 20m canyons, down and up each canyon repeatedly between controls. I now know my knee is no longer stable enough to climb and descend loose footing canyon walls. Add to that my fear of heights, I spent significant time descending backwards or sliding down on my butt. Because of the canyon crossings, for my own safety I cancelled plans to do my first goat run on Sunday. I had been looking forward to the goat format.
In the weeks preparing for the event, I ran too much and did too little (none) map reading practice. In the race, I ran well over 10k to travel 3.9k. To the left, I overran control 1 by twice the distance and eventually spotted control 2 so I could line up control 1. How excited was I for this event?!? To the right, I overran control 3 by 1000m. That is correct, I ran two unnecessary kilometres on leg 3. Taking 90 minutes to control 3, the bottle of water I carried was empty and there was not enough water at control 3 for me to add to my bottle. Without messing up the first three controls, my total time should have been 40 minutes quicker.
Hot, tired and thirsty, I was still able to settle down. I persevered and finished, something I was unable to do just a few years ago. I'm glad that I got to see the northeast section of the map. The terrain was so scenic but too much effort to carry a camera and keep racing. I walked the final three controls as I was wiped.
