Note

The Ark was scheduled to host a snowshoe race on the 6th of January but lack of snow cover has pushed the race to the 13th and possibly changed to a trail race.

Mad Trapper Snowshoe Race Series
Farrellton Road, Denholm township, Québec
86.0% 6/21

The lack of winter changed this event to a trail race though one racer who came all the way from Cornwall raced in his dual-tracs. Many ran in yaktrax but trail shoes were adequate. However, on an icy bridge half-way through lap 2, I fell hard with my right ankle under the weight of my body. Immediately after the finish line I requested an ice pack. The fall probably prevented the negative split (29:49). Very happy with my result.

I wore HRM through first lap but it became so loose that I abandoned the strap at mid-point.

track, -21windchill

I will have blisters from the rough and frozen track surface. It was so cold that after 1k I went back for my mitts to put over my gloves. The endorphins kicked in after about a mile. Unless I have zero knee pain tomorrow, I will take two off-days resting for Saturday's race.

Blanchet 16 & 1 south

Preparing for the 6h snowshoe next month, I tested old Rayovac headlamp (28 minutes on and last few minutes required red lamp). I drove through three deer on the roads. Left knee pain kept me walking downhill strides. Ridge Road and the fresh powder was deserted.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Even though I was last to complete the orienteering yesterday, my beat up knee earned the day off. I've switched to ASA. Lower knee feels sort of loose.

Randy designed course at Cité-des-Jeunes hoping to use for permanent course and/or junior training. Location is central too all of us but map includes far too many rocks. There may even be too many rocks for snowshoe orienteering which I will try later in the season.

With no winter by this date, conditions were good & sunny. Visibility through leafless trees was excellent. Ice on paved paths was dangerous, making my route choices difficult. From a junior's perspective, the course must have been a CHALLENGE. From my perspective, I made mistakes similar to mistakes I have made on this map in the past. Will I never learn?
