While exploring the 400-year-old Croat's Way, I must bring a compass. By the time I hiked from the highway to Hopeall Falls, I got turned around 180° and while I thought I was headed to the barrens highway I ended up at the end of Trout Farm Road. This was a great mistake, however, because Trout Farm Road was built upon the Heart's Content branch of Reid-Newfoundland railway which I could then explore (mp 14.6-13.3). Heading south towards the closed Foodland warehouse, the pond had overwhelmed the old track.

If I race Sunday it may be in falling snow and freezing temperatures. Today: Hill Road to highway to Thorne Road to old track to highway passed road to barrens and back.

Since I had to go to Foodland in Whitbourne, I could not resist exploring the Heart's Content branch of the Reid-Newfoundland railway (about mp0.5-1.0). I found remnants of ties in situ and took home 7 spikes that had been pulled by 1938.

Only a few little icebergs are left in Dildo Cove. I ran the shore, Hill Road, Station Road, turning towards New Harbour on the former Reid Newfoundland Railway Heart's Content branch. I turned on to Pump Hill Road as the track continued into bog. I then took the highway to the road which goes by Kev's and rejoined the old track all the way to where the branch becomes highway #80 to Hopeall.

By more than two hours, October has been my most reduced month of training. Even so, the injured knee still hurts 24/7.

Burton's Pond Timex 5km Road Race, St. John's
09h00
registration 08h00 Arts & Culture Centre

With the injured knee and the lack of participation/motivation from Vaughan Paul, I passed on this one. The weather was also cold and wet.

Snowshoeing (w/ a3) 8:00 [1] 0.73 km (10:58 / km)
shoes: Atlas Dual-Trac snowshoes

The snowshoeing was only a small part of a 62 minute hike along the Newfoundland T'Railway in Paradise to Shalloway Place (St John's mp11.5). So much snow had melted since Thursday on that segment of the TCTrail.
