I missed my predicted time by more than 5 minutes. That time was based on my 10k finale in August. In other words, since then my ability has deteriorated 12%. I feared a much worse deterioration. Most of the decline is from the limited mechanics of my left knee but weight gain and detraining will also account for some of the slow down.

I limped and scuffed my way through the first three miles, being continually passed by runners. From that point on, I was able to reel in runners and strided w/o incident. I ran off the side of the pavement, in the branches and stones to give my knee a rest. Lesson: there is no point racing 5ks.

Even w/o factoring the windchill, the temperature was well below freezing. However, I'm very glad I wore shorts and sleeves I could roll up.

The circle is now complete. After a 17 year retirement from foot races, I returned to racing with a slow but successful 10k in April 1998. As of today, I'm now running slower than when my second career started.

I was wrong. This outing was not a personal worst for slowest speed ever on a course w/o mispunch. My record remains 33:04/km.

Today, leg #7 was far longer than other nine legs combined. Hey, I didn't give up. There was plenty of time available. It was a beautiful sunny day and nobody was waiting on me. Needless to say, I wasn't in the mood to hang around at the finish discussing my performance. I enjoyed the social encounters in the woods though.

I'll be shocked if I wasn't the slowest of all who completed this course.

I suck. Most runners had no issue with control #7.
