Long advanced 39.7% 7/8 Having DNFed on the adjoining map two weeks ago, I was too anxious to sleep well. I blew legs 2, 3 and 10, losing more than 30 minutes. I was frustrated about being passed on the pasture runs but later reviewing my ground speed, I don't think I can expect any better speed on the knee. I suspect that had I not added time to my outing in legs 2 and 3, I would have been fresh enough to nail leg 10. This was my 106th orienteering race.

Preparing for the Boilermaker, I am increasing the duration of my workouts. My navigation through the woods was much better: a little LEFT of 6 and too far right after 2. If I go to Greens Creek from 2 to 1 that may be just enough reduction in time.

| Britannia & Andrew Haydon Parks score-O
74.4% 14/34 after age/gender handicap (77.0%) 5, 6, 7, 8, 4, 3, 2, 1, 13, 12, 14, 16, 17, 15, 11, 10, 9, 18, 19 I got 19 controls (plus my new age handicap of 2) minus 4 minutes of penalty. I didn't have time for another control but I probably messed up enough to total the penalty time. I had little choice but to use Britannia Park map to get my knee loose for the long run to Andrew Haydon park. Twenty four controls in 60 minutes would have been no problem. I headed for 4 from the start but saw too many others doing same and set my own journey with 4, never saw any traffic after that. Control 6 was far out on point of land. Control 8 was actually on fence surrounded by GREEN. The route to 3 was tough soft sand, as expected. I messed up at 13, pausing before the road. From 14 I hit GREEN to Greenview Road, then down parking lot and took a long time finding 16. Gord and James assumed 16 had gone missing. It was tough to find. From 16, I climbed hill to Carling but then went down one trail too soon. At 11 I pushed my stop watch so I would know exactly when to head back from Andrew Haydon Park. Coming off 9 I headed too marsh which this year was actually part of the Ottawa River. I should have considered that high water when I tried for control 20. The run from 18 to 19 was straightforward, over to Carling and then across the parking lot. The stop watch said it was time to turn back before getting to 19. However, I ventured in to the GREEN beyond 19 because 20 was so close (as the crow flies). Yes, I know the map clearly shows an uncrossable black line round the creek between 19 and 20 but I hoped for the best, a fallen log, any kind of ford. It would have taken a swim and now I was stuck in GREEN to fight my way back to Carling and the 2k sprint back to start. Yikes! Before the event, I spent a lot of time watching kiteboarding. I wonder if you need two knees to do that.

| My routes for the NCOF middle and long (before I DNF off the map) events can now be viewed on routegadget. Thank you Robbie.
Having viewed myself for the first time on RG, I now know how humiliatingly slow my ground speed is even on the navigationally straightforward legs. Do I have enough knee to fix this, hmmm?
