I had too much race-based adrenaline for sleeping last night.

Tonight I had my telephone interview with VANOC2010. If short track speed skating is interested in my file, I may have an interview in Vancouver as early as July and I should be preparing for the ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup, October 24-26, at the Pacific Coliseum.

Considering potential for sprint races, I had been looking forward to seeing this brand new map. However, with sitting water and so much green, I was unable to get up to sprint speed.

Aside from that, I had a terrible race strategically. Even so, I managed to grab ninth place (of ten) in the series and got two awards. [After Margus was factored in as the winner for the finalé, I actually won tenth place overall.]

In the race, I started west with a train on its way to nowhere. The train stumbled and broke up long after what should have been our first control, #13. From #12, I went 70m beyond #6 and had to back track. En route to #5, I messed 'round on wrong cliff. From #5 I headed for #7 but couldn't find it so went to #4 and then back for #7. From #8 I headed for #11 in the green hoping to use extended remnants of stone wall. My bearing was close but not close enough as I ended up right on #14 - 300m beyond #11 - so back on trail to #10 and then head for #11 again (no problem this time).

I stuttered much too much looking for #2, then heard a scream which turned out only to be John catching sight of me. He passed me en route to #1 as I stumbled through knee high swamp and he ran farther but higher and drier. From #1 I took Robertson Road and then through the radio tower property, jumped fence and followed Cathy 'til I realised how far off she was and backtracked to #9. From #9 I fought N through green on to trails straight to #13, NE to trail and trail-skirted green but left trails early and went directly to #15 and probably got a black eye from whipping branches on the way there.

Because of my poor performance, I didn't get to see half of the map. However, I do know that trails #21 and #20 on the east side of Hanel are waterlogged.

Until New Brunswick, that's it for orienteering.

I passed my once-every-few-years dental checkup.

I missed another phone call from the Vancouver Olympic committee.

It seemed a lot hotter than the thermometer stated.

Richard left Mount Royal before I was done.

I went to the wrong building for the start and had more of a walk than I planned. The mountain-side stairs (going down) were much tougher on my knee than I expected.

It was good to race through the cemetery even though there was a service in progress at control #13. I inadvertently did a 360 around the giant antenna between #5 and #6, losing more than six minutes.

Long advanced - Splits
