Mad Trapper snowshoe race
The Hilly Course

I played sweeper for the course. Even with the -36 windchill and walking most of the first lap, I was overdressed in my four layers. After bringing home the back of the 5k pack, I set out to catch the final 10k racer but didn't quite make it (even after four little shortcuts totaling less than 150m).

USSSA, Mendon Ponds NY

Shrimp chowder and hot & spicy cider: now that's what I call post race refreshments. I may have missed qualifying for USSSA champs by one place and by less than four minutes.

I changed my plan to compete in the ski-O after the snowshoe race. In hindsight, I made the right choice. In the snow and the dark, the five-hour drive took six and a half. I visited the orienteering venue but the crowd was so huge I knew that they didn't need my support. Besides, my little bundle of American funds had run too low even to pay for the thruway.

Though I finished in the back of the pack, the snowshoe race took a lot out of me. I have definitely detrained.

With blackout in Orleans yesterday, I had doubted that I would be going out of town.
