(rest day)

Wow am I sore today. My upper arms hurt, my lower arms, my ribs, my quads, my knees... Not that long ago I would feel like this a few times every month.

I was wrong. Dan is faster than me. Reviewing results from the 2004 race when I paced Dan, I finished nine seconds faster than I finished this Sunday. Despite my enormous effort to beat that time, I failed on Sunday.

However, that takes a lot of pressure off my next Boilermaker. Will there be one???

The goodie bag provided by the race organizers has become pathetic: the Saranac beer glass and three pieces of paper advertising something or other. No bread. No spaghetti. No candies. No coupons. Not even any bottled water.

If there was a 2009 class inducted in to the distance running hall of fame, it was not advertisted.

My carboloading the night before was from Wendy's: single burger (no onions), small fries and small Sprite.

It's official. I'm slow. I was finally assigned the last starting corral. It took 5:25 to get to the start line. I wonder if I caught any of the guys in the other corrals.

The good news is that I wasn't beaten by Corey or Kevin. You can't win if you don't play...and I'm still faster than Dan.

I was crying only during the national anthem (of that other country) which takes place about 5 minutes before the starting gun. Once the race started I soon learned that I had an objective I could reach, my emotions were in check and I focussed on the possible.

Late this winter (after the meniscectomy), I did a treadmill test which indicated I should be able to beat my 2008 BM time. Even though today only mile 3 and mile 5 (the wonderful downhill mile - 8:11) were under pace, I was still on track to beat last year after 11km. It's all downhill after that point on the course but my calves (in particular the right calf) were real tight. I figured during the downhill portion I could stretch out my stride (and the tendons) and still pick up time. Despite being downhill and feeling fine (so fine that I forgot to take naproxen before the race) and good conditions (temperature under 20° and windy), my watch told me I lost almost three minutes in the final two miles.

In my orienteering training for this race, I put in no race efforts lasting beyond 70 minutes. My legs weren't ready. In previous versions of the Boilermaker, I have taken Gatorade on course. There was none provided this year so my electrolytes were probably off after drinking water, water, water. I did pickup a popsicle with only one mile to go.

Finishing so far back now, there's just no room left for me when I try to join the very crowded post race party. I got my sweat bag, checked the cell phone, got in the car and headed home. I'm just grateful that I was able to put in one more Boilermaker (number 12 for me).
