Note

I'm still in a funk over my misplaced control at yesterday's meet. I told myself that at least the regular club members were not effected as the advanced courses were fine. But then a wise Paul D mentioned that the mistake should have been on the advanced course and not the intermediate course. The intermediate-level orienteer might not return to the sport after such a disappointment...

That didn't really make me feel any better.

To competitors on the immediate course, please accept my sincere apologies for your disappointing outing. As controller for the event, it is my responsibility to check the safe and accurate placement of all controls. I failed, control 4 was not in the mapped location. Thank you to the articulate competitor that I met at the mapped location. My error was well explained.

It know it doesn't fix things but my disappointment is probably greater than your own. I hope that you try future events sponsored by our club. I won't be the controller.

To the competitors in the advanced courses, I am confident that all controls were within 15 metres of their mapped locations as of 10h00. A number of the flags were placed within features so that hikers and dog-walkers would not notice the controls from the well-used trails. We've been out on this map for weeks now.

I thought control 219 was a bit too easy. That flag was set back within the feature. I thought controls 215 and 220 were too difficult; the flags were brought slightly towards incoming runners.

Thanks for the challenge.

This is the first time since 1997 that I was not out on a Terry Fox run. I'm dedicating my first hour today to that cause. A donation was already forwarded. I had planned to run the Terry Fox course tonight after orienteering. However, after 10.5h of orienteering this week, I'd had enough.

I'll be adding my AP splits even though I did not compete today. I took the times during my first exposure to the legs used in the course. I was not yet familiar with the locations and I was busy checking other features for accuracy when the splits were run. This will help me better estimate winning times in the future.

I accompanied a runner back to intermediate control 4 to see that it was still there and soon learned of it's incorrect placement. D'oh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

control pick up

Note to self: when you next plan to orienteer for six hours, bring body glide. The three-hours of clean up were not cardio but the pack carrying was tough on the feet.

I covered the distance but only logged the time I was actually running. Little did I know I would be spending hours orienteering later today.

Ziggy seems to have lost some of his pulling skill. He runs too slow and walks too fast...and what's with all the giant dump trucks on our abandoned railway?
