spin 48:44 [3] 15.4 km (3:10 / km)

WMBEW

After three events in the summer score-O series, I'm sitting seventh (75.3%) but there are so many good orienteers yet to run their three scoring events.

In tonight's score-O I was three controls short of completion but I was also 11 minutes late. Before this event, I was eighth in the summer series. However, that's just too much extra time for placing well. Nevertheless, I wanted to be out that long for training purposes.

I decided to begin with the east side of the map because past score-Os starting on the west side have not gone well for me: missing the easy early controls. There was very little trail running as Bert had set most controls on advance/intermediate features. Coming out of 24, I hit the ground hard, reading map and running into a tree: lots of blood. Leaving 27, I made the stupid mistake of heading to already-visited control and lost 100m there. Finding 25 was fun because the water in the dried stream bed was up above my knees. Shoes were then real soaked for the run along Robertson Road.

I expected to hesitate on the many short trails going from 1 to 2 and I actually started looking 50m too early. I then did the same at 3 and talked to Qi on her way into 3. Route to 5 was straightforward using giant radio tower. The 26 humidex must have been wearing me out because I slowed down 30m early for 14. It was nice long fence run to 11 but I drifted right after that finding the stone wall which hosted 7 (which I planned to pass because I was already in extra time) and messed around finding that hidden-in-pit control. I'm sure 8 was also hidden behind tree, then up to Timm Drive for pavement running. I returned early to trail but I think the extra distance on trail run was equal to the extra speed for running in shade. I went back up to the road between 15 and 16 but took the wrong trail to finish, coming through the parking lot.
