Post Chester 100 Recovery

Sleep, eat and rest. I went for a sports massage on Monday evening and my physio reckons I am in pretty good shape considering I had done 100 miles. There is some mild soreness/tightness around my peroneal tendons and my IT band was a bit tight but nothing untoward and what he expected to see. He said I am better conditioned, fitter and stronger which is down to my training and my excellent coach.

Your coaching plans, advice and guidance enabled me to complete this, my first 100 miler. There are areas for me to work on and improve but I'm chuffed to have achieved my two-year dream so THANK YOU!!!!!

Chester 100 race 1:00 [0]
slept:0.0 shoes: Salomon S-Lab Sense Ultra

Continuation from the day before.

I finished after 3pm approx on Sunday.

The cut off was 32 hours so myself and several others were technically, timed out but Wayne let us finish. His reasons for this was it was the first Chester 100 plus we were in a reasonable shape to complete the race and were so near to the finish it would have been cruel to have stopped us.

My plan was to complete this 100 mile event well within the cut off so 27 to 28 hours. I am disappointed in myself for finishing outside of the cut off as if this had been any other 100 miler I would have been timed out.

There are things I did right and worked well but there are also elements I got wrong so areas for improvement. I think I did too much walking but would be interested to hear your thoughts on this. I got it right for the first half and my support crew plus several others said I looked strong up until the 50 mile mark. In fact, I was half way down the field at that point and if only I could have maintained that....

On the positive side I did it!! I've no injuries - no knee problems at all either during or afterwards and my Achilles was fine too. No problems with that niggly bursa I have on the back of my left heel or any hel pain which makes me wonder if the change of shoe has helped. I usually wear Inov-8's but wore Salomon for this event and think it might suit me better. A better fit with no rubbing on my heel. Those S-Lab Sense Ultra shoes were well worth the expense!

I started the recovery as soon as I finished. I had a protein drink -Tailwind's 'Rebuild Recovery' chocolate flavour then when I got home, I had a bath containing Epsom salts followed by my wearing SKINS recovery tights. Had a few hours sleep (went out like a light!) then got up, had a protein rich meal and then went to bed at a reasonable time, i.e. 11pm not my usual 2am...

I went for a sports massage on Monday and have been keeping my fluids going and eating plenty of protein. Feet were swollen after this event and I have a few blisters but apart from that am able to walk.
