The monthly Belgian Beer Café social ride. Didn’t ride with the fast guys this time either, just relaxed with the drunken Irishman as usual.

When the ride is at 8AM on a Saturday morning it is too dangerous for me to ride fast; accidents will happen! There’s no need for me to add to the Saturday morning deathroll on Beach Rd, it’s bad enough as it is…

Run (Orienteering) 1:30:00 [4]

State League, Mt Tarrengower.

First of all, I find it very hard to motivate myself to run 12-13km in a small event like this, because I know that I will have to run the whole bloody thing alone in a field of 3-5 other runners. Put simply: no competition – no fun! –But that’s just my point of view.

One can also raise questions about the point of having the long course in the first place. Wouldn’t everyone be just as happy with 8km? In Norway we only have long courses in championships or national league. In smaller events we try to make things as convenient as possible both for the runners and the organisers and there’s absolutely no shame in that. We all know how much work it is to organise an orienteering event.

Are we in Australia afraid of the old farts that always expect their own course and age class? Do we need 10 courses when the event attracts less then 100 runners? Wouldn’t 4 be enough? Is it more fun to run your “correct course” or to have reasonable big fields with a bit of competition?

And why do we even care when there’s no presentation or prices anyway? In my mindset, an event without presentation and prices is a training run – not a competition (but that’s probably just because I’m Norwegian). Regardless of the way you look at it, when there’s little or no focus on the results; wouldn’t the most important thing be to have fun in the forest?

In summary I guess it’s a question of defining what fun in orienteering is. I think it is to have a fast paste event with a bit of competition, like for example Neil Barr’s “Bendigo Ironman” handicap-race.

But of course, we can’t have too much of that because it’s not 100% fair. And to have events that are 100% fair is obviously of vital importance when there are no prices to win and no presentation or focus on the results…

I hope I’m not stepping on anyone’s toes here, because that’s not my point. After all, this is my training diary so it’s about posting my thoughts and viewpoints!

Just a short little run from home.

Got a bit annoyed with myself for not training yesterday, so I felt like compensating. Got out at about 7.30AM and rode up to Mt. Dandenong. Great ride, but I wish I had eaten some breakfast towards the end. Had to make an emergency stop at a servo to get some chocolate… Reminds me of last time, only this one was not so serious. (just over 23min up the hill)

Run (Road/Park) 1:30:42 [3]
ahr:153 max:174

First time I’ve written this for about half a year; but today it was stinking HOT! Got a bit lost so it ended up being a bit longer than planned.

Cycling (Road) 1:15:37 [3]
ahr:150 max:183

Finally some training! Got sick of work, so I went for a bike ride at lunchtime. Felt good to use my body again for a change. Hopefully, wouldn’t be invited to any Scandinavian (hvor faen ble det av de svenske damene Disco???) or birthday parties this week so I can give my liver the break it needs.

Run (Road/Park) 1:03:17 [3]
ahr:140 max:158

Didn’t feel 100% today, but at least I got out. One of my shorter loops, probably took me 10min longer than normal.

Run (Road/Park) 59:47 [4]
ahr:150 max:185

Good run today. Felt aggressive. Did a couple of random intervals as well.

Run (Road/Park) 1:01:34 [3]
ahr:136 max:162

Didn’t make it to the MFR run today, did a run from home after work instead. Feeling tired, and I just wanted a quiet night at home.

Cycling (Mountain Bike) 2:50:00 [3]
ahr:137 max:197

Rode mountain bike mostly on small tracks with Ferg, Liggo and Warren. About time to start the training for the 24h. For a first timer 2h50min was long enough for me. It was great fun though; really brought out the inner child! Then again, that might have been due to the fact that I was riding a 14 year old girl's bike…

Cycling (Road bike) 2:34:05 [2]
ahr:125

Rode with my “work cycling team”. Very easy for me, was probably 20 years (and 20 kg) younger than the rest of them. A nice ride in the sun, but I don’t think it helped my performance in the around the bay in a day.

Regular loop. Nothing exciting to tell... (Sorry Rob)
