Run (Orienteering) 1:30:00 [4]
State League, Mt Tarrengower.
First of all, I find it very hard to motivate myself to run 12-13km in a small event like this, because I know that I will have to run the whole bloody thing alone in a field of 3-5 other runners. Put simply: no competition – no fun! –But that’s just my point of view.
One can also raise questions about the point of having the long course in the first place. Wouldn’t everyone be just as happy with 8km? In Norway we only have long courses in championships or national league. In smaller events we try to make things as convenient as possible both for the runners and the organisers and there’s absolutely no shame in that. We all know how much work it is to organise an orienteering event.
Are we in Australia afraid of the old farts that always expect their own course and age class? Do we need 10 courses when the event attracts less then 100 runners? Wouldn’t 4 be enough? Is it more fun to run your “correct course” or to have reasonable big fields with a bit of competition?
And why do we even care when there’s no presentation or prices anyway? In my mindset, an event without presentation and prices is a training run – not a competition (but that’s probably just because I’m Norwegian). Regardless of the way you look at it, when there’s little or no focus on the results; wouldn’t the most important thing be to have fun in the forest?
In summary I guess it’s a question of defining what fun in orienteering is. I think it is to have a fast paste event with a bit of competition, like for example Neil Barr’s “Bendigo Ironman” handicap-race.
But of course, we can’t have too much of that because it’s not 100% fair. And to have events that are 100% fair is obviously of vital importance when there are no prices to win and no presentation or focus on the results…
I hope I’m not stepping on anyone’s toes here, because that’s not my point. After all, this is my training diary so it’s about posting my thoughts and viewpoints!
