Running (mostly off-road) 1:40:55 [3] 21.89 km (4:37 / km) +279m 4:20 / km
ahr:171 max:206

Headed up to Rampart Reservoir with the guys. Planned on doing 20' easy, 20' steady, 20' tempo, but really ended up being more like 40' steady, 20' steady/tempo. The reservoir is at 2800-2900m, so maybe that and teh undulating trail made the tempo section a bit harder.

Such an amazing place to run though - a super fun undulating and winding forest/shore-side trail, with views across the deep blue water to Pikes Peak jutting into the sky. Would have been great to join the kayaks/SUPs on the water! A very cool loop with a satisfying gps track!

Legs felt fine for most of the run, just started feeling dead and tired during the tempo part and on the small but deceptively tough ascents along the way. Breathing noticeably more as well. Definitely not worth doing any proper sessions for the short time I'm here. Sore pains on the left side of stomach at the start, but that fortunately eased off only for the right-hand side to start up as usual; managed to control it ok though.

Running (road+path) (Easy) 41:43 [1] 8.39 km (4:58 / km) +141m 4:35 / km
ahr:178 max:206

Pre-brekky explore of the promisingly named 'Garden of the Gods'. It turned out to be a very nice garden. As maybe should be expected though, this other-worldly spot is shared by many. An early morning circumnavigation of the park is a must, with a few lens covered faces already patrolling at the early hour.
Legs felt a bit dead, but enjoyed meeting a few local Bambi and fortunately not rattlesnakes.

Running (mostly off-road) (Easy) 1:40:56 [2] 12.86 km (7:51 / km) +908m 5:48 / km
ahr:171 max:219

Drove (!) most of the way up Pikes Peak with Remi and Petter, parked, then ran up to the summit through a cool little boulder field. Not such a nice summit tbh, construction of a new building underway, but then headed off down the trail the race route takes on the other side of the mountain. This proved to be much nicer, zig-zagging down on loose small gravel single-track. Turned around at a random point and headed back up the same way (all about that practice). Took it all fairly easy, making sure the breathing didn't get too noticeable (it never felt like we were running at 4000m, maybe due to the incredibly easy access to said height). Took a lactate threshold test once we got back to the summit - 3mmol/L popped up, interesting.
Jogged back down to the car on the easier trail by the road. Big change in temperature (mainly due to the wind) on either side of the mountain, be prepared peeps. Legs a little dead now after a couple of days of bigger descents than usual, but nothing too bad.

Running (mostly off-road) (Easy) 29:05 [2] 5.22 km (5:34 / km) +35m 5:24 / km
ahr:176 max:206

Summit-to-car because I ended the activity at the top for some reason.

Running (mostly off-road) (Easy/Steady) 2:42:58 [3] 23.74 km (6:52 / km) +1153m 5:31 / km
ahr:160 max:206

Easy/steady run up to Barr Camp on the Barr Trail (still c.9km/1200m from the summit), then 3x2km (3' up/down) downhill reps. Felt pretty lethargic and with tired legs to start with on the steep road up to the trail, then as things warmed up felt better and was able to go at a more steady pace. Started feeling the altitude/heat nearing Barr Camp. Had a wee break there to chat to Zach Miller and try his famous apple pancakes (can recommend).
Easy trail the whole way, steeper at the start, and nice parts of shade in the forest with glimpses to Pikes Peak summit.

Running (road+path) (Easy) 27:59 [2] 6.43 km (4:21 / km) +31m 4:15 / km

[This run was done on the evening of Tuesday 13th]
Off the flight and into Denver for a run and dinner with Jackson and friend. Nice loop around a big city park, a little like the Meadows but fattened up by added sugar. Really good to shake-out the legs, and get ready for my 4th main meal of this weird long day.
4 PM

Running (mostly off-road) (Easy) 1:43:12 [2] 18.83 km (5:29 / km) +668m 4:39 / km

[This run was done on morning of 14th]
Easy loop with Remi, Petter and Jackson over to Manitou Springs then up onto the trails. Climbing and a couple of summits during the first 10km, then really nice undulating single trail around to Red Rock Canyon. Legs felt fine, and noticeably breathing more.

Running (road+path) (Easy) 28:39 [2] 4.63 km (6:12 / km) +178m 5:12 / km

Morning wake-up with KT. We hoped for a sunrise but sadly the cloud was down. Legs felt fine

Running (road+path) (Easy) 32:23 [2] 5.95 km (5:27 / km) +66m 5:09 / km

Morning pre-travel shake-out with KT around the river loop. Very atmospheric day with the cloud hanging around the cliffs, and saw a whole tree being catapulted down the raging river, scary. Legs not too bad today, just a bit stiff and no real pains anywhere.
