WCOC club race at Hurd State Park. Nice drive there through Middletown, and especially beautiful historic East Hamden which is just north of the park. Gorgeous day, fairly warm 78 to 80 degrees, and a little humid, got there early but still hot. Sweated profusely and exhausted at the end. I don't do well with heat! Came in 3rd out of 14 on Red.

Ran the same map in June 2017, course was counter-clockwise that time with some similarities.

Decent race though had a few issues, especially inside the circle. On 1 I must have passed within meters of the control but just didn't see it at first. On 2 the control was at a small cliff which I ran 5 meters away from but didn't see at first. On 3 I executed well across the hill, mostly ignoring the paths which were everywhere, but didn't know exactly where I came down the cliff and judged I was further N crossing the swamp. Plus route choice would have been better going around the hill to the N, saving some 20m climb. 4 and 5 were clean, pleased with how I followed the contours to 5. On 6 came low crossing the indistinct stream but stopped myself quickly reading the contours. All of these probably didn't add up to more than 2 or 3 minutes tops.

Route choice to 8 was suboptimal, looking at AP I lost almost 2 minutes, clearly the better choice was follow the line to the road and round the lake on the N side.

Then the heat got to me leaving 9, inexplicably didn't read the map properly and started following the wrong path. And towards 11 executed well except leaving the path two thirds way through didn't keep direction very well. 13 was interesting, I went down low because I followed a nice new/unmapped MTB path all the way to just north of the marsh. But AP indicates I lost about 30s.

Total about 4-5 minutes lost (AP reports only 2), typical for me, how do I sharpen my navigation inside the circle? And improve route choices.
