Hiking 1:35:00 [3] 3.5 km (27:09 / km) +100m 23:45 / km

Nice hike with Carolina from Squaw Valley High Camp to some of the lifts and back. Much clearer than yesterday, but still hazy from all the smoke.

Orienteering race 46:12 [4] 4.51 km (10:14 / km) +99m 9:13 / km
ahr:140 max:153

US Champs, Middle Distance, Little Truckee Summit, CA.
Race was supposed to start in the morning but was delayed 4.5 hours due to smoke from the huge wildfires 100 miles north. Carolina came with me which was wonderful and fantastic - what great company she is.

I zonked out after two thirds and walked most of the rest. Around 85 degrees never agrees with me at all, plus 6000 feet altitude, very dry air, and very very out of shape meant my legs and lungs just gave up around #8... Plus a 20-25 minute walk to the arena where I had counted on there being water, but there was none so I was parched from the start. Carolina had water in her bags but we arrived late and so I rushed ahead.

But besides that it was great! Beautiful forest, very runnable (while I could run!). Course wasn't very difficult, my only real mistake was veering left to #8 and ended up 75 meters off the control, which apparently cost me 3 minutes but by then I was just walking.

Came in 9th which is fair given my slowness. Was on track to be in the top 6 until legs gave in at #8.

Hiking 40:00 [3] 3.5 km (11:26 / km) +100m 10:00 / km

Hike down to Emerald Bay with Carolina, and back up again.

We woke up in the morning expecting clear blue skies and perfect hiking weather...but found a world enveloped in smoke from the huge wildfires around 100 miles north and north west of Lake Tahoe. Wind shifted overnight so all of Tahoe was covered in thick smoke. Our plan had been hiking up at Squaw Mountain, but air quality was in the "extremely hazardous" range so instead we drove around all of Lake Tahoe, and then down to Emerald Bay to rent kayaks (they turned out to be all booked). Not much of a day but our thoughts go out to the people suffering so terribly from the fires.

Had a very nice dinner with Jeff and Judy Saeger at Rubicon in the Northstar resort. Great to chat with them!
