xc skiing 20:00 [3]

trying out skate skis - after 20 minutes figured I was proficient enough to actually rent skis and do the red course on them.

I was debating between red and green - and took Greg's advice and did the red course minus #7 which was a gratuitous uphill :)

Skating (with plenty of flailing) was really really fun. The ski area (except for #7) was also pretty flat, which helped. I liked the slight downhills :) Skating just feels faster. In some ways, it has a bit of the feel of swimming since form matters so much. Every once in a while I would get a couple of steps that just so much smoother, a tantalizing taste of what it could feel like with better form.

The course was great - there were the wide groomed trails and also lots of skinny, curvy snowplowed trails in between to make route choice interesting.

Kudos to all the organizers for a fun weekend.

Went out for a second round of skiing around in the afternoon, but soon realized that I was pretty foggy/tired and not reacting to things very quickly.

An absolutely beautiful day -- sunny, comfortable in just tights/long shirt/vest.

Saturday Feb 6

xc skiing 2:00:00 [3]

tried classic skiing ski-o - first half of the course.

Lessons learned:

- the snow can be really deep

- cutting across between trails can be really really hard and slow (ended up swimming in snow at one point, may have cursed lots :)

- cutting across on a contour over an open field can be really fun

- hard to hold the map in your hand

- sucks when snow clumps on the bottom of the skis if the wax if wrong

After a 20 minute break at the lodge during the 'map exchange' (still on the clock), I felt much happier about life. And less hungry.

The second half was much more fun. Just sorted out the skis a bit more so they were less frustrating, and got into the rhythm of it. I borrowed Greg's or Daddy-O's map holder which made more of a difference than I expected because I didn't have to stop so much.

Tuesday Feb 2

xc skiing 3:00:00 [3]

Work team took a trip to Tahoe, and three of us went xc skiing. It happened to be the same day as ski o. Alex took the time to give an awesome lesson :)
