Note

I have lost the will to go running when it feels like almost -20 degrees sensible outside. Hopefully it will be warmer by the evening.

March tomorrow and no signs of increasing warmth on the 10 day forecast. Fed up now!
5 PM

Running 31:21 intensity: (21 @0) + (11 @1) + (1:10 @2) + (29:39 @3) 5.55 km (5:39 / km) +46m 5:26 / km
ahr:163 max:173 shoes: Integrators 5000

Put the right shoes on today and was a lot faster! Feeling quite good!

Cross Fit 1:00:07 intensity: (32:54 @0) + (3:20 @1) + (2:10 @2) + (20:45 @3) + (58 @4)
ahr:128 max:178

Then didn't feel too great for the workout but got it done! Cheered on the others in the Open Workout 14.1 - looked tough!

4 PM

Running 34:47 intensity: (34 @0) + (48 @1) + (5:41 @2) + (27:44 @3) 5.58 km (6:14 / km) +42m 6:00 / km
ahr:159 max:172 shoes: 2014 Saucony cohesions

Running to Cross Fit. The Canal Trail is still an ice scape disaster, should have been wearing dobs. As it was, it was more of a skitter than a run.

Cross Fit 1:03:11 intensity: (33:26 @0) + (4:24 @1) + (5:48 @2) + (13:26 @3) + (6:07 @4)
ahr:135 max:182

Lots of nice stretchy time, followed by some squats and 20 minutes of aerobicy body weight type stuff. My little sprints felt pretty good, I liked that. I can't wait to be able to run properly outside again!

6 PM

Cross Fit 48:37 intensity: (16:58 @0) + (6:11 @1) + (5:49 @2) + (15:24 @3) + (4:15 @4)
ahr:143 max:182

Research workout number 2 for this week. Pretty tough, throat a little dry. Did some pull up type stuff at the end. A bit of kipping practice, but not too much.

Note

Went to bed at 9 last night. Hoped to wake this morning after 10 hours sleep feeling refreshed...not the case. Still very tired today. Eurgh...

8 AM

Running 37:03 intensity: (1:15 @0) + (7:14 @1) + (7:37 @2) + (20:57 @3) 4.85 km (7:39 / km) +96m 6:57 / km
ahr:154 max:172 shoes: X Talon 212s

Easy run around East Rock for the first time in a long time. Lovely sunny morning but everything refrozen again.

4 PM

Running 38:15 intensity: (14 @0) + (3:23 @1) + (25:48 @2) + (8:50 @3) 4.6 km (8:19 / km) +27m 8:05 / km
ahr:151 max:164 shoes: X Talon 212s

Set the HRM to beep at me over 80% today, because I still didn't feel recovered when I woke up. Set out at West Rock, thinking I'd just go for a stroll if I wasn't enjoying running. But it was tough, lots of wet snow, so very slow, and surprisingly, I felt much stronger than yesterday and I enjoyed it. So hopefully getting back to normal after last weekend. Will just run for as long as I want this week, then start the 50 minute block next week.

Saturday Feb 22, 2014 #

1 PM

Cross Fit 1:08:17 intensity: (35:04 @0) + (2:08 @1) + (5:43 @2) + (15:40 @3) + (9:42 @4)
ahr:135 max:186

Science experiment work out 2 for this week. It'll be nice to do them all with other people next week. This was tough by myself.
2 PM

Recovery 27:34 intensity: (1:57 @0) + (12:51 @1) + (12:38 @2) + (8 @3) 3.18 km (8:40 / km) +18m 8:26 / km
ahr:142 max:155 shoes: 2014 Saucony cohesions

Tried to jog home but the canal trail hadn't been ploughed, so it was not at all relaxing. Gave up halfway and called my parents instead, to gossip about the fact that my little sister is getting married! Eeeee! Gorgeous spring day outside, it's a shame we have to go back to winter next week. I have ordered my compost delivery.

Friday Feb 21, 2014 #

Note

Still wiped. Knew I would feel pretty bad when I got back, didn't expect this bad. Think the sleep disaster is the problem. Many sleep this weekend!

Thursday Feb 20, 2014 #

6 PM

Cross Fit 40:00 intensity: (19:37 @0) + (1:03 @1) + (1:56 @2) + (14:51 @3) + (2:33 @4)
ahr:140 max:180

Dan's research work out. Totally wiped all day today but felt better having done it. It was all in thirty second bursts, and apart from the negatives was probably a good recovery session. Might run tomorrow!

Tuesday Feb 18, 2014 #

Note

Got to bed at 12.41, got up at 3.30, on the flight at 6.07, slept most of it (shows how tired I was, I never sleep on flights), then made it in time for the earlier Amtrak and swallowed the price bump to get home much earlier. Totally exhausted. Well worth it though.

Orienteering 1:13:15 intensity: (15:18 @0) + (17:21 @1) + (22:09 @2) + (18:27 @3) 4.68 km (15:40 / km) +158m 13:24 / km
ahr:144 max:169 shoes: X Talon 212s

I was physically done today. Too little sleep, and too much heat. Pretty disappointed with the way my body held up for this trip, but still enjoyed it an enormous amount, which is a credit to Barb, Erin, and all the wonderful juniors and adults on the camp. I hung some controls for a control pick exercise, and hugged the re-entrants instead of crossing many times over the hill. This was a bad idea as they were full of thorns and I didn't enjoy it much. Running along the dry river bed was really fun though. Huge crags and bends.

7 AM

Cross Fit 26:20 intensity: (14:43 @0) + (4:23 @1) + (3:04 @2) + (3:46 @3) + (24 @4) 1.58 km (16:39 / km) +1m 16:36 / km
ahr:131 max:181 shoes: 2014 Saucony cohesions

Pre breakfast agility session. Really cool, good to do some drills and loosen up. You can tell who used to play football from our group!
10 AM

Orienteering 34:17 intensity: (9:22 @0) + (3:21 @1) + (6:40 @2) + (14:26 @3) + (28 @4) 3.24 km (10:34 / km) +47m 9:51 / km
ahr:145 max:177 shoes: X Talon 212s

Hanging a few controls, picking cactus out of my foot, then shadowing and hiding a bit. Matt decided to burn me off in a dry valley and it was pretty hardcore.
2 PM

Orienteering 17:30 intensity: (1:48 @0) + (44 @1) + (2:25 @2) + (12:33 @3) 2.29 km (7:38 / km) +21m 7:18 / km
ahr:156 max:172 shoes: X Talon 212s

Shadowing Emma and Izzy round the simplification course. Both were doing great, but I'm not sure Emma believed she was right enough.
4 PM

Orienteering 26:11 intensity: (1:36 @0) + (31 @1) + (3:16 @2) + (20:01 @3) + (47 @4) 2.65 km (9:52 / km) +52m 8:59 / km
ahr:161 max:177 shoes: X Talon 212s

Collecting my three controls. Messed up the middle one and struggled to get any speed on the cactus slope with the cactus control. Made it back on time though, whew!

Saturday Feb 15, 2014 #

11 AM

Orienteering 1:06:24 intensity: (9:43 @0) + (9:43 @1) + (17:27 @2) + (29:01 @3) + (30 @4) 5.84 km (11:22 / km) +94m 10:31 / km
ahr:151 max:176 shoes: X Talon 212s

Shadowed Addie on the long green course. She was running very well at the start and I was worried I wouldn't be able to keep up, but then the shock of switching from 30 degrees silly to 30 degrees sensible on top of 5 hours sleep struck, and we slowed down a bit after that. Brilliant comedy moment when I saved her from a cactus and it pinged up to embed itself in my finger. There are many many tips still stuck in there. Catalina State Park did not actually live up to it's reputation - although it was tough, it was also spectacular, and I really enjoyed it.
2 PM

Orienteering 36:38 intensity: (12:32 @0) + (7:15 @1) + (5:43 @2) + (11:08 @3) 2.67 km (13:43 / km) +52m 12:30 / km
ahr:142 max:171 shoes: X Talon 212s

Went out to hang a control stake for Leif and then caught up with various groups of juniors doing a relocation exercise. It was really hot by then and most were a bit frazzled, including myself.

The view from one of the controls as I waited for them to arrive.

Orienteering 50:00 [3] 3.0 km (16:40 / km)
shoes: X Talon 212s

Some clever soul shut the car hood on her Garmin again, and so has no data for today. I bought a new one from REI as it was having charging issues anyway. I went out with Emma to do a pairs exercise and got stabbed by a cactus and very hot. We had a lot of fun but we need to be better prepared tomorrow for Catalina. I was very impressed with how quickly Emma adapted to the rather loose mapping style.

Orienteering 26:00 [4] 3.0 km (8:40 / km)
shoes: 2014 Saucony cohesions

Pairs score race around the river in Phoenix with Katrina. We kicked butt, despite being a couple of minutes late. The map wasn't very good but it's aaaaages since I ran fast with a map in my hand, so that was fun.

Now waiting up very late for delayed juniors to arrive.

Note

Hello Phoenix! What a day!

Wednesday Feb 12, 2014 #

Note

To book an airport hotel, or not to book an airport hotel.

Am supposed to be on the 7.30am Amtrak from New Haven to Newark tomorrow. Not sure whether to assume the trains will be running or go in tonight. Obviously then my flight might be delayed or cancelled.

Bah! I hate having to make these decisions, I barely slept because I was constantly trying to figure it out.
8 AM

Cross Fit 1:01:43 intensity: (9 @0) + (1:01:12 @1) + (22 @2)
ahr:141 max:146

Row test. How far can you go in an hour? Answer was 11.891km. Pace was constantly around 2.25 but I had to get up a couple of times to stretch out. Never done anything like that before. It was very dull.

Running 30:17 [3] 5.07 km (5:59 / km) +29m 5:49 / km
shoes: 2014 Saucony cohesions

Loosen up run. Now back to stressing about tomorrow!

Tuesday Feb 11, 2014 #

Note

I received a bunch of gardening things a week ago and I can't quite bring myself to throw away the packing...

Running 39:19 intensity: (1:17 @1) + (9:41 @2) + (26:49 @3) + (1:32 @4) 7.07 km (5:34 / km) +50m 5:22 / km
ahr:157 max:178 shoes: 2014 Saucony cohesions

Ran to meet Rob at work. Just caught the last of the light, which is coming a lot later now. Felt really good to be running with very light bag and cushioned shoes! Feeling pretty optimistic about running once/if I get to Arizona!

Monday Feb 10, 2014 #

6 AM

Running 33:55 intensity: (45 @1) + (3:14 @2) + (28:11 @3) + (1:45 @4) 5.31 km (6:23 / km) +36m 6:10 / km
ahr:164 max:176 shoes: 2014 Saucony cohesions

Slow run in with a very heavy bag full of exam papers. Glad I wore my normal trainers, enough grip in the fresh snow and needed the cushioning. Legs pretty tired.
6 PM

Cross Fit 1:08:28 intensity: (47 @0) + (22:23 @1) + (8:43 @2) + (21:55 @3) + (14:40 @4)
ahr:150 max:185

Heck. Second test of Dan's study, and it was mega. 5 sets of 1km row, 15 thrusters, 15 burpees and 15 ring rows. Was worried about the rowing but had more stamina than I expected for it. Wasn't fast, but under 5 minutes every time. But the thrusters got really hard, even at just 45#. Glad I'm not good enough to do 15 pull ups yet, that would have been hideous. 46.01.

Saturday Feb 8, 2014 #

Note

Spent all day at work today. Feeling a bit glum, looking forward to Arizona at the end of this week!

Note

Eep, the weather says it will get to 30 degrees sensible in Pheonix this weekend :) Going from -10 to +30 is going to be a rather large shock!

Cristina, or others - if I manage to get my car in a timely fashion (by 5pm), where should I go for a short exploratory jog in/near Phoenix airport?

Friday Feb 7, 2014 #

7 AM

Running 40:45 intensity: (4:45 @1) + (20:08 @2) + (15:52 @3) 6.68 km (6:06 / km) +41m 5:55 / km
ahr:156 max:166 shoes: Integrators 5000

Into work. Tired and stiff. Integrators were the wrong choice this morning, some icy patches but I could have done with the cushioning more.

Thursday Feb 6, 2014 #

9 AM

Cross Fit 1:06:31 intensity: (27:25 @1) + (5:38 @2) + (16:49 @3) + (16:39 @4)
ahr:113 max:185

Finally back to the gym. An 80% long intervals day today of body weight stuff, which was exactly what I needed to loosen up after yesterday's snow clunking.
8 PM

Running 52:22 intensity: (8:56 @1) + (37:13 @2) + (6:13 @3) 5.0 mi (10:28 / mi) +60m 10:06 / mi
ahr:148 max:163 shoes: Integrators 5000

Ran home from work. Long days at the moment. Pavements were mostly clear in New Haven, so it was a toss up as to whether Integrators were the right shoe choice. Still some bad patches in Hamden though. Felt better than I thought I would.

Wednesday Feb 5, 2014 #

Note

Damn teaching ice storm combo. I am not going to get a run in today.
4 PM

Running 38:50 intensity: (2:11 @1) + (8:21 @2) + (28:14 @3) + (4 @4) 5.5 km (7:04 / km) +58m 6:42 / km
ahr:159 max:175 shoes: Integrators 5000

Decided I had to run or my head would explode. Ran around the neighbourhood then walked back in to teach Section. The run was fun, some slow snow chugging and some easy stuff where it was clear.

Monday Feb 3, 2014 #

Note

Any good suggestions for somewhere affordable and nice to stay in Sonoma or Napa? I've found some lovely looking places up in Russian River, but ideally a little closer to the towns would be good!
8 AM

Running 42:01 intensity: (2:27 @1) + (4:56 @2) + (34:38 @3) 6.44 km (6:32 / km) +79m 6:09 / km
ahr:159 max:170 shoes: Integrators 5000

Surprise snow scuppered my Cross Fit plans and I ran into work. Slept appallingly and was stiff as a result. Very pretty out there this morning.

Sunday Feb 2, 2014 #

4 PM

Running 49:11 intensity: (1:21 @1) + (6:18 @2) + (37:02 @3) + (4:27 @4) + (3 @5) 7.23 km (6:48 / km) +126m 6:15 / km
ahr:164 max:192 shoes: X Talon 212s

Sneaked out to West Rock just before dark. Warm evening again, felt like spring for the second day running. I have sorted lots of stuff this weekend but I didn't make it as far as my seeds, and just realised I should already be planting my onions and leeks! There's a really cool Heirloom store that opened in Wethersfield, but it has really silly hours that people with jobs can't get to. Booo!

Again, by the end of the run, I felt like I was actually running again. So that was pretty cool.

Saturday Feb 1, 2014 #

Cycling 18:00 intensity: (3:00 @1) + (6:00 @2) + (3:00 @3) + (3:30 @4) + (2:30 @5)
max:193

The Lead Coach from our gym is doing some kind of science project. For 8 weeks I'm going to be randomised to a group that will either done a single mode of training twice a week or a mixed more cross fit like model. Today we did a HR max test on the Airdyne to establish a baseline. It's trickier than on a treadmill because you have to control the output yourself, and when you start to have to push you tend to overshoot a little. I got to 225 watts for 3 mins, which was probably the right place to stop. HR was 193 at the end, probably should have pushed hard for a further 30 seconds and would likely have reached 197/98. Given I'm trying to get back into things, it was nice to establish a baseline for me too!
10 AM

Running 30:55 intensity: (35 @1) + (22 @2) + (18:44 @3) + (11:14 @4) 5.37 km (5:46 / km) +51m 5:30 / km
ahr:172 max:182 shoes: 2014 Saucony cohesions

Went for a run afterwards to get the wobble out of my legs. Up the canal trail, then realised the woodland off to the side had no "No Trespassing" signs and was nice and open at this time of year, so came back through there. Had to get back because it was imperative to go for coffee with Isabel, who did her test after mine. Tried to stretch out a bit at the end and was pleasantly surprised to be stretching out at marathon pace and not something depressingly slower.
