Run to Kendall. It's such a shame in this heat that Toscanini's is temporarily (?) on my way home while they remodel their other store.

Run to the dentist to get my crown fixed by an adorable dentist. 2 sets of 3 x 300m in not too hot weather. Was quite happy this morning. And then the news got terrible for the whole rest of the week and felt miserable.

Final session of the Greater Boston Youth Team. I only made it to two but I thought the kids were great, and had some really good time with a few of them. Today Will really made me laugh by trying to sulk the whole way round (head down, rounded shoulders) but managing to do all the navigation, and at the last control he sighed like an old guy and went "it's such a long way to the finish," and it was about 250 metres. It was adorable. Collected the controls. Starting to get hot! Nice to be in the woods.

Hill Walking 5:00:00 [3]

We were tired today and weren't sure what we were up for so we headed up the valley behind Buffalo Mountain figuring we could go to the waterfall and turn around if necessary. But then there was a really nasty descent which would have been horrible to go back up, so we decided to carry on. A cheeky mountain goat came to check us out at the waterfall, and Rob made a chipmunk friend. After that the trail slowly climbed and got more alpine, turning into a gorgeous wildflower meadow with HUUUUUUGE snow fields. We couldn't tell where the trail went underneath, and ended up climbing to follow a ridge line and stomping through quite a few occasionally waist deep snow fields, It was AMAZING but really hard work! We eventually popped above the treeline where we startled a lone coyote, and had to sit down for a while before cresting the col. The final 5 steps were the hardest 5 steps I've ever taken whilst walking - legs burning, lungs screaming with the altitude - it was exhilarating. The way down was much easier - much less snow and a much easier trail, with plenty of marmots to keep you occupied. There was also a fantastic beaver dam. Made it back down and got a lyft back to the car - I love Colorado. It's amazing. Such a good stop off on the way home.

Hill Walking 4:00:00 [2]

Walked up the Spruce Creek Trail south of Breckenridge into the glaciated valley. The start of the walk was in full sun and pretty rough, but then the forest pulled in and it got much better. We climbed past a huge waterfall and hit a lovely rocky lake where we hung out for a while, but then picked a route alongside the feeder stream to cut the corner into the next bit of the valley. That was tough as the altitude was getting a bit extreme and there were some snow fields to pick across. But then when we popped over the ridge in was likes being in the Cairngorms on acid. We sat in the sun for a while, getting unknowingly extremely sunburned, then headed down. There were marmots everywhere and the lakes were still partially iced over, and it was fantastic.

Note

Arrived in Breckenridge mid afternoon. Spent the afternoon there while Rob finished up at his conference, wandered around a bit in the glorious woods and was forced to dance at the worst conference disco ever. I can't remember the name of Jon Hamm's DJ on Kimmy Schmidt, but it was that.

This was supposed to be 30 mins tempo but in the third mile the heat, period stomach and conference food caught up with me and I had to stop at the zoo loos, which luckily I spotted yesterday! Which is a shame because it was fun being on the trails in the Canyon rather than on the pavement in the park proper. Very happy to get this done - felt terrible and tired at the start but energized by the end.

Short stretch - now I've got to get to a party on the USS Midway. I don't think I'm going to stay very long but it'll be a cool place to watch the sun go down.

Veeeery stiff this morning so did a HR below 150 job to the nice breakfast spot before a sneaky trip to the zoo. The zoo really is excellent. I particularly enjoyed the baboons having teenager trouble.

I was super tired this morning so I took it easy today. Took in some excellent posters and tried the afternoon speaker session, but everyone was basically talking about their favourite acetylation site, so I went home and went for a run instead. Thanks to a ten year old orienteering map and a different trail map of the park I found a sandy track this time, and it was more fun running, but hilly. I was tired but it was good to get out.

Early morning run before first full day of the conference. Run was fine, though a homeless guy yelled "I'm staying out of your way asshole" with absolutely no malice whatsoever at me on the way up the hill. Then a major poster session where I talked non-stop for four hours. Shattered now!

Managed to force myself to sleep until 6.30 and then went to get coffee at a place I passed yesterday. Didn't realise it was the Rock and Roll 5 Miler, so got quite a lot of company for one section! Luckily I picked the right side of the course and could actually get to some delicious coffee and a very delicious hipster to the match avocado toast. There were avocados in the Farmer's market yesterday so I don't care! And Rainier Cherries that were actually picked ripe as opposed to a week early then shipped to the East Coast. Favourite food time of year! Best fruit on the planet, no contest.

The rest of the week bundled up into one and I didn't have the time to do much. Now in San Diego for a conference. Explored Balboa Park - a pretty amazing place with utterly terrible trail maps! So lots of stops and fewer trails than I would have liked. Palm trees and people everywhere - such a change!

Good to stretch out after an early start in Boston, 6 hours on a plane and a bunch of exploring.
