rhr:47 slept:12.0

Normal doctor says stress/exhaustion. Sports doctor says overtraining, but also that I didn't overtrain looking at what I've done, but that stress from the lab and inability to sleep in my banging night club of a house (thanks go out to the boys upstairs) etc has probably contributed.

So...no running or even cycling for four weeks. Getting to work is going to take FOREVER. I can swim for 20 minutes slowly if I like, and walking is all good.

Bah. Bye bye marathon fitness. Hello starting again from the bottom. Can I really be arsed?

Normal doctor today and sports doctor tomorrow. Good.

rhr:55

Not good again today, cycled into work but slept badly and pulse was rocketing. Have finally managed to get in to see my normal doctor tomorrow, and am attempting the sports doctor too as they'll clearly be the only ones with anything useful to say. Fed up and feeling miserable, sitting at home with my thesis writing on my knee.

Warm up & strides 6:12 [3]
ahr:152 max:164 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Short jog to the gym. I think my HR is a little high still.

Strength 33:22 [3]
ahr:138 max:173 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Tried to do a full strength session but the gym was packed with uber tight t shirted gelled to the max pretty boys making huge gurning sounds, so I bashed out most of a quick programme far too quickly and legged it. I have turned into such a weakling, it's not funny!

Back squats 40kg 4 x 8
Lunges 25kg 4 x 8
OH Press 15kg 4 x 8
Push press 20kg 2 x 8

Then I really had to leave before I damaged someone.

Recovery 5:36 [3]
ahr:167 max:178 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Jog back to the evening of deep cleaning! I think it was partly the dust in my room making me feel bunged up and shit, so Rob helped me give it a huge once over and now it smells of polish and is beautifully clean and tidy. Mmmm...

Orienteering race 38:32 [5] **** 5.4 km (7:08 / km)
ahr:196 max:200 spiked:12/13c shoes: Integrators

So I got dragged into the SHI relay by a desperate John Rye, and ended up on second leg on an uber grotty day. Set off just behind Jen Thornton and two Irish girls, and caught them by number one. Then had a much higher gaffle at number 3 and had to catch them again! Felt like I was running hard but not progressing as fast as I should have been! Managed to catch Holly just after the spectator switch and brought us back in 3rd to give Helen a fighting chance. Navigated really well on some tricky slope controls but running was a lot harder than it should have bee - not used to this short tough stuff anymore! But still, 4 mins down on Mhairi and Helen who were together for half the course, so that's a good place to start the winter! HRM took a while to settle so not convinced the average is correct, so am not too worried. Did hit 200 on the spectator bit though, was really going to chase Hollie!

rhr:51 (sick) (rest day)

Today I finally managed to get up before 10am! First time in 5 days. Impressive stuff. My headache is finally receeding and my pulse is starting to go back to normal. Good.

Note
rhr:45 slept:8.0 (sick) (rest day)

Felt dreadful on Tuesday, stayed in bed pretty much all day - no real symptoms, just super tired and sore head. Then had to go to a stupid conference all day at Murrayfield and the air conditioning was so strong that I froze all day for 13 hours, and then today I feel rubbish, but my resting pulse wasn't bad. Rest through the weekend I think. Bah.

Strength 53:33 [2]
ahr:100 max:187

And so, back to the gym! Down to St Leonards now and it was a bit busy. Doing two weeks of flexibility before getting back to proper weight, so today I used the ladies bar for everything except the cleans (used 20kg for these), and did 3 x 5 of:

Full squats with small rotation at bottom
Lunges
OH squat
Romanian Dead Lifts
Cleans

Then had a really good long stretch.

Orienteering race 41:03 [5] ***** 6.7 km (6:08 / km)
ahr:191 max:200 spiked:20/22c shoes: Saucony Fastwitch

Possibly one of the most fun races I have ever done! Multi level racing, busy city streets, St Paul's Cathedral, and our own episode of the Bill in full on glorious technicolour. Beautiful day, devilish courses, I was a muppet occasionally but not much! Really really good fun.

Orienteering 24:27 [3] 2.2 km (11:07 / km)
ahr:163 max:179 shoes: Saucony Fastwitch

Shadowed James round the junior course as a warm down - after an initial distraction he was really good, sussed out all the pitfalls way before falling into them.

Cycling 19:10 [2]
ahr:126 max:161

Cycle into work. Everything was against me again this morning. Mostly BOC gas canister man.

Cycling 35:18 [2]
ahr:120 max:165 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Pretty hefty cycle up to KB. Possibly the most hills in Edinburgh ever. Or at least that's what it felt like with quads of lead.

Orienteering 26:20 [4] *** 3.2 km (8:14 / km)
ahr:174 max:186 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

FTN at KB. Got bored on the second loop and didn't run very fast. Too many long easy legs meant it was easy to plan ahead and there was nothing particularly devilish. The map now desperately desperately needs an update. Legs felt heavy but okay whilst running - I might have been different if there'd have been any hills. Felt like I was moving at a decent pace but HR not that high. Not sure. Hmm. I didn't have much fun today, dunno why. Will rest again before London at the weekend which I am dead excited about!

Cycling 16:57 [2]
shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Into work.

Cycling 20:32 [2]
ahr:135 max:173 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Some mega cycling to the gym via the bank and post office where the post office guy was so busy telling blonde jokes that he hadn't realised there were 8 people in the queue, and I was number 7. HURRY UP!

Circuits 1:11:12 [2]
ahr:119 max:177 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Ouch! I knew this would be sore, but Steve is a madman and made us do about half an hour of lunges, with and without weights and twisting and ow ow ow. Muscles feeling fine but tendons etc still pretty rubbish, and sat out the last few sets. A little bit of abs work to end, so now they hurt too. I am a total cripple. But in a good way.

Cycling 40:00 [2]

Felt a bit poo so skipped the jog about at intervals and went home to eat food instead. mmm.

Cycling 39:39 [2]
ahr:115 max:149 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Into work and back.

Orienteering 25:51 [2] 3.9 km (6:38 / km)
ahr:187 max:195 shoes: Integrators

Fun mass start race at Cartmel Racecourse with the hangover crew. A light green course followed by a green, lovely little bit of wood and plently of haring about in almost the right direction but not quite. Didn't bother with the yellow and orange loops at the end to avoid the hard stuff, but was soooo good to be out running fast in a forest again. Ace. Beautiful day too after yesterday's complete insanity.

Orienteering 53:37 [2] ****
ahr:152 max:188 shoes: Integrators

Between the service and reception of Karen and Chris's lovely wedding, Helen and I decided to brave the elements and get a spot of training in. We took maps of Haverthwaite which I mistakenly though were waterproof, and battled around doing some pretty rubbish navigation in a hurricane for nearly an hour, as our maps slowly disintegrated. Nevertheless, it was the most fun I've had on two legs in a long long time and my legs felt absolutely fine off the tracks and roads - a bit of pain on the hard stuff. Need to be sure I still get the rest my body deserves after last week, it's going to be hard as I feel really good!

Pottering about on the bike feeling surprisingly chipper.
