Cycling 53:57 [3]
ahr:135 max:167

Cycling about town.

Hill Walking 4:16:12 [2]
ahr:114 max:163

A New Year's attempt at the Seven Hills of Edinburgh with Becks. We set off just before 7 and realised after doing Costorphine, Craiglockhart, Braids and Blackford that we weren't going to make it back to Castle Terrace in time, and so aborted and went to dance to cheesy 90s rave instead. Brilliant night!

Cycling 27:31 [2]
ahr:125 max:153

Home from Rob's and then into the lab.

Running 47:02 [3] 5.5 mi (8:33 / mi)
ahr:169 max:179 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

First proper run. 47 mins continuous, max HR 85%. First 15 minutes were really tough, legs didn't quite know what had hit them, but after that they eased up nicely and it was great to be moving. 5.5 miles felt like a long way - hard to believe I ran 26 of them faster not so long ago!

Cycling 12:10 [2]
ahr:138 max:167

Pretty hardcore cycle back to Rob's, it was FREEZING.

Monday Dec 29, 2008 #

Cycling 40:50 [2]

Into the lab then up to the Royal Mile to meet Miss M for a lovely lunch and natter at Always Sunday.

Sunday Dec 28, 2008 #

Intervals 42:01 [3] 3.9 mi (10:46 / mi)
ahr:155 max:176 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Hopefully final set of psuedo intervals taking in the Meadows, Links, Princes Street Gardens, the Mound, then home. Getting a bit bored of these now, happy to be going continuous on the next set!

Saturday Dec 27, 2008 #

Cycling 17:23 [2]
ahr:118 max:147

Into the lab - bah!

Cycling 28:42 [2]
ahr:111 max:148

Cycle back - was going to stop off on Princes Street and check out the sales, but it actually looked like a scene from 24 Days Later so I stayed on the bike and escaped ASAP.

Yoga 14:33 [1]
ahr:65 max:92

After last night's disastrous attempt at a night's sleep, a bit of yoga to calm down.

Note

In the last couple of days I have started to feel tons better. Had a good day despite a poor sleep last night, and my pulse is behaving far more like it used to as opposed to getting all fast and uppity. When I finished yoga it was down at 46, which is the lowest I've seen it since before the marathon I think, and far more like my usual resting rate. Not quite ready to take off my "sick" tag yet, but hopefully soon.

Friday Dec 26, 2008 #

Hill Walking 48:56 [2]
ahr:110 max:139

Walk from Kyle to Loch Scalpaidgh with the folks. Jen dragging her feet a little.

Intervals 39:01 [3]
ahr:153 max:169 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Ran/jogged round Loch Scalpaidgh proper mud technique stylee and then back to the Cottage. Most and muddiest fun I've had in ages.

Rubbish walking 16:13 [1]
ahr:112 max:130

Couldn't make it all the way home in my alloted 39 mins so had to walk a bit.

Thursday Dec 25, 2008 #

Cycling 39:22 [3]
ahr:134 max:170

Was going to take Mum's bike out for a longish Christmas Day spin, but Mum's bike needed a bit of TLC and wasn't up to the job, so did a short loop instead with a couple of good hills. Waved Happy Christmas to Ross with severe Christmas Tree envy.

Wednesday Dec 24, 2008 #

Intervals 35:02 [3]
ahr:154 max:167 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Run/jog back from the Brochs onto the shore at Glenelg. Again actually feeling like a run in place - pretty exciting! The Brochs are really cool ancient settlements - huge conical things. Pretty awesome. Weather might be finally changing for the better!

Tuesday Dec 23, 2008 #

Hill Walking 1:21:51 [2]
ahr:113 max:153

A very foggy, wet and windy walk to the Old Man Of Storr, which you couldn't really see until you were about ten metres away. Holiday, wheeee!

Monday Dec 22, 2008 #

Rubbish walking 30:00 [1]
ahr:111 max:129

Before and after my run back from Balmacara. Bumped into Ross in the bustling metropolis of Duirinish on the way back, that was fun.

Intervals 32:03 [3]
ahr:157 max:170 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Back to not quite really interval intervals. 2 mins at max 80% HR, then a min to recover back to 70%. Actually got up to a run for the first time in months, and enjoyed discovering a new path.

Sunday Dec 21, 2008 #

Hill Walking 1:06:13 [1]
ahr:103 max:145

Weather had totally broken, wind and a lot of rain. Quick mid afternoon stroll from Strome Castle with the gang plus Rob. Hint: even if the weather is really really poor, Strome Castle is never going to be worth the drive.

Saturday Dec 20, 2008 #

Running 29:02 [2]
ahr:147 max:162 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Quick jog around the headland from Station Cottage just before the sun set. Gorgeous evening, always forget just how breathtaking the views are across to Skye and Applecross.

Friday Dec 19, 2008 #

Cycling 35:00 [2]

Beasting cycling about town in the horrendous wind and rain. Rather hard work. Walking around carrying big bags of presents was also pretty difficult too.

Thursday Dec 18, 2008 #

Note

I am no longer a member of EUOC.

Running 26:09 [2] 2.5 mi (10:28 / mi)
ahr:149 max:159 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Wow, 26 whole minutes. Today I even took in some very gentle inclines and it felt good, pulse was lower than before, can't wait to speed up a bit!

Wednesday Dec 17, 2008 #

Cycling 36:11 [2]
ahr:127 max:169

Dash about town having waited for hours for the Postman to deliver a totally substandard Christmas present that I then had to go out and replace. Damned internet.

Cycling 34:00 [2]
ahr:125 max:149

Very windy cycling around town, huge gales on the way back from the cinema. Changeling is majorly harrowing but excellent. Go see, but maybe not if you're full of christmas cheer.

Tuesday Dec 16, 2008 #

Cycling 20:39 [2]
ahr:128 max:159

Today I got nearly squished by a bus at least three times. It was horrible. This is the worst week of the year to be on the roads.

Running 24:01 [2] 2.3 mi (10:27 / mi)
ahr:149 max:156 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

First continuous "run" in ages! It felt okay, legs were a bit stiff but it actually feels like it would be easier to go faster - it's quite a restrictive pace. It was windy and rainy and it was absolutely ace to be moving.

Monday Dec 15, 2008 #

Cycling 26:25 [2]
ahr:120 max:153

All today's cycling rolled into one. Not sure what the point is of putting a halt on the tramworks then filling the roads with a million sets of smaller roadworks instead. The drivers have got that Christmas madness look in their eyes again.

Sunday Dec 14, 2008 #

Hill Walking 1:58:30 [2]
ahr:125 max:168

Walked up Ben A'an which at uber Rob pace turned out to be pretty fast and strenous. A lot of fun as he fell over in the marshes on the way down many many times. Was going to jog along Loch Katrine at the end but looking at the heart rate it's the most strenuous thing I did in a while, so that'll do nicely. Run again on Tuesday.

Saturday Dec 13, 2008 #

Hill Walking 2:30:00 [1]

Walking round Loch Lubnaig then up into the forest for a bit of off piste excitement with Rob. We were going to go up a hill but I was knackered by then so we didn't. Some strenuous off path uphills but generally pretty easy.

Friday Dec 12, 2008 #

Cycling 10:00 [2]

Barely counts but I want to record everything I do until I'm back to it, just in case whatever it is turns out to be too much.

Intervals 20:00 [2] 1.75 mi (11:26 / mi)
ahr:132 max:153 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Went for a flatter 2 mins jog / 1 min walk today and it was much better, jogging pace was semi decent and it all felt comfortable.

Cycling 22:34 [3]
ahr:135 max:158

Beasting cycle in horrible wind and rain to George Square for the Neuroscience Christmas lecture (at 6pm on Friday evening, yes, I am an uber geek). Couldn't move against the wind if I kept to my heart rate limit!

Thursday Dec 11, 2008 #

Cycling 19:45 [2]
ahr:126 max:144

Cycle in - lots of rubbish traffic light action. It's so dark! Only ten days till the longest night.

Wednesday Dec 10, 2008 #

Cycling 19:44 [2]
ahr:130 max:151 slept:8.5

Slept really well and made it into work by 8am. Score. Only to find I had very little to do when I got there. Less score.

Intervals 18:01 [2] 1.4 mi (12:52 / mi)
ahr:140 max:159 shoes: Saucony Cohesion

Another one for the trade descriptions act here. For the first time since the SHIs, I went running! Okay, so running is maybe a bit of a stretch of the imagination for covering 1.4 miles in 18 minutes, but you know, got to start somewhere. I jogged attempting a max HR of 150 for 2 mins, then walked for 1. This max HR was fine for the flat but had to go pretty much backwards to get up the very small hills. Still, it was awesome to be out, especially in the bright sunshine, and I look forward to doing it again on Friday! Might go for continuous this time, or 2.30/30.

Cycling 37:45 [2]
ahr:127 max:153

Some rather precarious cycling once I'd bought too much food at Tesco a long way from home. But the food was tasty, so all was good! I am now totally whacked, but I think in a good way. Sleeeep.

Tuesday Dec 9, 2008 #

Cycling 40:40 [2]
ahr:127 max:155

Cycle from work and about town including a trip to the horrible horrible post collection office, where I managed to leave one of my christmas presents in a bin. Clever, very clever. Rubbish day all round.

Monday Dec 8, 2008 #

Cycling 23:15 [2]
ahr:120 max:148

Cycle home from work.

Sunday Dec 7, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Did lots of pretty aggressive shopping in York, then sat on a train for a veeeery long time. Ear feeling loads better today, might actually be well enough to go for a short run on Tuesday as hoped. Thank goodness for neomycin.

Saturday Dec 6, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Major hungover this morning (although not too bad that I couldn't manage an amazing lamb burger from the Farmer's Market), and then got on the train to go see Rob's family and Auntie Mary.

Friday Dec 5, 2008 #

Cycling 25:00 [2]

So potential cold took a slightly different route for a bit of variation, and came out Thursday evening/ Friday morning as a super painful ear infection - this was the cycle to the doctor and then into work for the Christmas lunch. We started drinking at 10.45am and finished about 12 hours later. It wasn't exactly carnage but it was the most fun I've had in a long time. Was going to Black Tape it but after my third ridiculous hiccuping fit we went home :)

Thursday Dec 4, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Rest day. Today the cold feels more inevitable than the last few days, but still not totally inevitable. Walked into work and not wearing HRM so not sure what's going on there. However two Christmas parties over the next two days should sort me out in one direction - ill or not ill as opposed to maybe half and half. Want to be good for when I start running again!

Wednesday Dec 3, 2008 #

Cycling 21:10 [2]
ahr:125 max:157

Traffic lights were not my friend this morning. My HR is happy at a steady pace but sprinting to get to a green light make it totally rocket. Obviously still not 100% - will start the running very carefully next week.

Cycling 15:35 [2]
ahr:110 max:145

Cycle to the centre of town from work to try and stop Rob from being a rubbish boy at shopping. He was still rubbish, but at least in a mildly amusing fashion.

Tuesday Dec 2, 2008 #

Cycling 19:14 [1]
ahr:126 max:148

Cycle in - still feel like I might be on the edge of a cold and Rob is now spluttering - can I just get ill please? None of this wavering rubbish.

Cycling 21:33 [2]
ahr:112 max:137

Cycle to St Leonards - feeling much better in the afternoon after watching Pam Sklar battle for her rubbish GWAS ideas. They are still rubbish, but she gets lots of money. Not fair.

Swimming 20:04 [1]
ahr:118 max:138

Tonight I managed three whole lengths of front crawl without drowning. It was much easier for some reason this time, must have been the lack of blind panic. Did a bit of cycling about later too to go and see Mhairi, and got a very wet bum cycling back in the SNOW! Ahem. I got very excited, but actually it was just soggy and windy and mighty uncomfortable.

Monday Dec 1, 2008 #

Cycling 28:28 [2]
ahr:115 max:145

Cycle home via the bookshop in Stockbridge.
