Running 27:01 intensity: (51 @1) + (28 @2) + (8:20 @3) + (16:55 @4) + (27 @5) 3.24 mi (8:20 / mi) +81m 7:44 / mi
ahr:170 max:186 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Bleurgh, felt like rubbish this morning! Only had one cocktail at girlie drinks yesterday, but that seems to be enough these days. Tired legs and tired me. Probably ten hours on my feet didn't help yesterday.

So where is everyone going? New Hampshire or Ottawa?

Running 27:03 intensity: (41 @1) + (1:26 @2) + (13:02 @3) + (11:54 @4) 3.19 mi (8:29 / mi) +74m 7:55 / mi
ahr:164 max:181

Up to a whole 27 minutes now. Feeling good to be consistent, even on a small scale though. It is gorgeous outside today, warm with a nice cool breeze, no humidity. Awesome. Investigated the flat bit of East Rock - my little side path is blocked completely by downed trees next to the river, but aside from that there's just small branches. Here's hoping Tarrywile has suffered similarly minor damage. Got bitten or stung on my side by something out there and it really hurt, still stinging now. No idea what it was, never saw it.

ahr:140 max:164

Easy jog round the neighbourhood with Rob once the storm had passed. Not much damage really, some downed trees and branches, and we saw one set of downed power lines. Lots of people out and about.

Made it out to Ansonia this morning but am not battling with the Windows plug in to get data, so it can wait till I'm home this afternoon. Got there no problem, took the 34 on the way back as I needed to get choccie milk for the final mousey run before the hurricane, and a couple of days after just in case. Bad idea. Not only were the first few Dunkins I tried out of whole fat choccie milk, but there were huge queues of people panic buying everywhere. It took a loooong time to get back to New Haven, where I realised I'd forgotten my ID. Driving back from work to home took ages, new Yalies still moving in and big trucks, presumably stocking up the kitchens for the next 48 hours. So I decided to cycle back to the lab, only to find that someone had tried to steal my back tyre. Got the toolkit, fixed it up, but they've bent the wheel a bit, and cycled in. Got to run the mice, give them extra food to last through tomorrow, and then head home to hunker down.

I need a new bike!

Orienteering 41:17 intensity: (2:01 @1) + (1:06 @2) + (7:25 @3) + (24:01 @4) + (6:44 @5) 4.97 km (8:18 / km) +98m 7:33 / km
ahr:175 max:189 spiked:8/10c

Yey, orienteering! So I realise when deciding what to do today, that my O' confidence is almost non-existent. I considered doing the Fog O', but despite having hung the controls, I didn't feel like I could successfully do it. Then I decided to man up, and it went really well. The main error was number 8, where I let the slope push me way too far to the right. I knew it, but when I hit the trail junction that wasn't on my map I chose to go investigate anyway, realised the slope was nothing like as steep as it should be, and figured out what had actually happened and re-climbed the hill to the control. I also thought I missed tricky six, but after a bit of wandering I realised the tag was gone and I had been right there. GPS confirms this.

Really enjoyed the morning and I hope the woods don't get destroyed over the next thirty six hours. Fingers crossed.

ahr:172 max:185 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Ooh, 23 whole minutes. My heart rate is too high for the speed I was running, so maybe my body isn't back together again. I am going to ignore it for now though and carry on running.

Note
(rest day)

Because it has been a very tough week so far :) But my body is properly back together again, and we spent the morning fixing the stuff we knew needed fixing on the car. We went to Swedish Performance Autos at the suggestion of Mike, and the first thing they said was "I shouldn't really be telling you this with regard to our business, but those parts are covered by warranty until 120k miles." So take it to the Saab dealer and they will do it for free. But first Swedish checked it was actually broken for free, and checked the brakes for us. So we took it to the Saab dealer, and it took a long time (especially as their garage door broke when the car was inside), but they even had the part in, and it cost us absolutely nothing. We were expecting around $800, so that was a rather good start to the day! We can now afford to fix the aircon, and the noise we thought was the brakes squeaking was apparently the suspension, as it has now stopped. Excellent all round. We will be returning to Swedish Performance, that's for sure!

I have planned lost of orienteering fun for the next week or so before I leave, as Rob is very busy preparing a figure for a mega paper, and I hope that the hurricane doesn't affect too much of it.

Back into it training day 1. 20 minutes. Legs quite clearly haven't run for a week and chest still feels a bit heavy. Nice morning though.

Sunday Aug 21, 2011 #

Note

Almost there now! Going to start with short runs tomorrow - get back into the consistency groove then do some more quality.

Yey! Double strength antibiotics are potent things. Already feeling a ton better this morning. Sleepy though! Great to see Sam in touch!

Who knows anything about Xboxes? Is the 4GB Xbox 360 pretty much the standard one?

Thursday Aug 18, 2011 #

Note

Yey! Turns out I have a real life medical reason for feeling like crap these last couple of weeks. Good old Yale Health plan. Antibiotic time.

Wednesday Aug 17, 2011 #

Note

Can people send me a text or e mail me their cell numbers? I have switched to a fancy phone and now cannot access my crappy old brick to get the numbers back. I have the same number. Thanks!

Tuesday Aug 16, 2011 #

Note

3 out of 3. Superb.

Sounds like the pink and white challenge to me! First I will have to draw some more maps :s

Note

I think I might be getting sick.

Nonetheless, had a cathartic afternoon starting to clear out the lab as boss wandered off somewhere. It feels good to be almost ready to move on.

5 miles easy. It was back to sticky again this morning, but I didn't feel like vomming, so all in all, a better turn out.

What to do in CT when you have a new car and it rains all day?

Note

Ali C is a huge inspiration. I have never seen anyone decide that they are going to do something, and just get it done in such a systematic and determined way. This week has already been a huge success, no matter what happens for the rest of the week.

I, on the other hand, can't even figure out what I might want, never mind take the action to go get it. I'm utterly exhausted right now, which for once isn't a function of overtraining, but constant mental stress. Once these last few weeks in this situation are done (22 days to go!) I need to figure that out, and do it. Until then, I am going to see any exercise I do as a bonus, and make sure I take any opportunity I can to chill out.

Anyone got any ideas for cool aims? Fun races for the autumn?
5 PM

Running 51:10 intensity: (2:56 @1) + (8:08 @2) + (39:24 @3) + (42 @4) 5.12 mi (10:00 / mi) +178m 9:01 / mi
ahr:156 max:174 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Bleurgh. Raining all day, which was actually the most fun part of this run. Very novel to get wet from something other than your own sweat. Unfortunately I felt like I was going to vom the whole way round, and had to keep stopping to ensure I didn't. Downhills were especially challenging.

Ah well. You can't win em all. It was also "cold" today - 21oC. Did feel chilly at the start in the rain though.

So today, we got the train to Bridgeport, met up with a lovely young man, drove his car to Milford, sat in Starbucks for an hour having a conversation we expected to be awkward but really was quite fun, went back, hassled the dealer, who finally told us the car was generally good but needed some work on the suspension. We hightailed it back to Bridgeport, got to Bank of America at 11.49 (closing time 12.00). Rob went in to sort cash, I went to find Geico. Realised were we at 4600 and needed to be at 4100, and had 11 minutes to do it. Looked at the brother of the guy selling the car, asked him if he could run, he said yes, and we legged it down main street. Into Geico at 11.54, insured by 12.02. Use their phone to call Rob, he picks us up, we drive to the DMV, get there at 12.15 (closing time 12.30). It's rammed, but we get to the info desk and she says they're all there for licence things, there's only actually two people ahead of us. In five mins we're at the desk, and the car is ours. We drop the nice guys back at home, and head to Stamford, to get a quote for fixing Rob's iPhone (which he dropped down the loo, and bizarely still works except for the battery won't charge). They say they can't fix it, cue worried face, but then that he has 27 entirely unexpected days left on his warranty and he can get a totally new phone for $200. Cue big smiley face and new iPhone. So we drive to the top of Bear Mountain to celebrate, take in the windy roads and the big views of the Hudson Highlands, and finally get home to New Haven, after what I guess can be described as a very successful day!

Will get the work done on the car this week, and then we have a nice car and we are freeeeeeee!

Yes. About time.

On an entirely different note, well done to some great WOC races today!

Friday Aug 12, 2011 #

Note

Should have made it out this morning, it was nice again. But sleepy. Still, it hasn't been as bad a week as the previous ones, on a work or running front. Monday was horrible.

Running 1:06:16 intensity: (1:04 @1) + (56 @2) + (47:44 @3) + (16:32 @4) 7.0 mi (9:28 / mi) +194m 8:43 / mi
ahr:165 max:181 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Steady 7 miler. Felt sleepy tired when I woke up but set out anyway, felt much better by the time I got back. Almost fresh out there today, almost pleasant. Right hammie tight again by the end, will do some stretchy stuff tonight.

I've held up pretty well looking at the news this morning, but this sickened me all the way to my core:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-14458424

My thoughts go out to the normal, working class Londoners who are having their livelihoods destroyed by these thugs. I hope all my friends stay safe.
7 AM

Intervals 54:04 intensity: (5:05 @1) + (11:31 @2) + (14:34 @3) + (6:24 @4) + (16:30 @5) 9.22 km (5:52 / km) +169m 5:22 / km
ahr:162 max:192 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

6 x 800m this morning, but there was no way I was running round that track in full sunlight! Did a mostly road loop round East Rock, to hopefully maximise speed potential without dying from the heat. Pretty undulating but I think it went pretty well - certainly had the jelly legs halfway round!

Times were:
3.12
3.37 (biggest hill)
3.23
3.00
3.11
3.23 (all trails)

Still a long way to go to get to a sub 40 10km. Have to wait till it cools down I think!

Ahhh...the Monday morning confrontation makes you feel great about the week to come...
8 AM

Running 55:35 intensity: (1:10 @1) + (8:27 @2) + (45:58 @3) 5.0 mi (11:07 / mi) +165m 10:05 / mi
ahr:155 max:169 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Easy 5 miles. Not actually that easy because it was totally gross out there. Still, feel better for having made it out.

Tennis 1:10:48 intensity: (1:06:55 @1) + (3:53 @2) 3.22 km (22:00 / km) +1m 21:58 / km
ahr:121 max:148 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Tennis with Rob. I am not very good at tennis but regardless, it was fun. Bursts of speed are no longer my forte it seems, although is was ridiculously humid which may have something to do with it. It is a triumph for me to hit the ball in, but I unintentionally managed a couple of great shots today nonetheless.

Edit: that Garmin trace is awesome.

Friday Aug 5, 2011 #

Note

CT people! Rob and I are ready to buy a car, but we can't get our head around the process required to do so.

It says on the DMV site that we need an Insurance Card before we can register the vehicle at the DMV, which obviously takes time. If we buy privately, can we even drive the car home? Will it get towed if it's on the street without registration in our name?

If anyone can give me a step by step idiots guide to the process, I would be eternally grateful.
6 PM

Running 1:02:09 intensity: (51 @1) + (4:04 @2) + (26:11 @3) + (24:09 @4) + (6:54 @5) 6.76 mi (9:11 / mi) +353m 7:54 / mi
ahr:169 max:190 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

Evening blast to try and get rid of some negative energy. Unfortunately I hadn't planned on running and my stomach was not happy. After my second dash behind a tree, when I realised I wasn't strictly far enough from the trail, I was thinking "if anyone sees me, I bet it'll be Will." And low and behold, a feet comes whizzing past, as if on demand. So I yelled at him and and kept me company for the rest, and by the end of the run, I felt tons better. Great to get out and even better to have the company.

Thursday Aug 4, 2011 #

Note

Booked a doctor's appointment. Think it's just stress, but it'd be nice to know for sure.

General aerobic 30:00 [1]
ahr:118 max:153

Not feeling up to running so did a silly bootcamp video on Netflix. It was fun, but I felt weird.

Yoga 30:00 [0]
ahr:76 max:107

And a yoga video. Didn't make it all the way through, after half an hour of "let your spine flow like water" and "massage your internal organs" I was done.

I heartily approve of Yoga for relaxation, flexibility and even strength needs, but I can't deal with all the baloney that comes with it.

Wednesday Aug 3, 2011 #

Note

I am now coughing up crap aswell as being mega tired. It's just not my week/month.

Tuesday Aug 2, 2011 #

7 AM

Running 55:27 intensity: (1:07 @1) + (37:17 @2) + (16:19 @3) + (44 @4) 5.23 mi (10:36 / mi) +96m 10:01 / mi
ahr:148 max:176 shoes: Red Saucony Cohesion

5 or so miles easy, really boring. My HR is way higher in the hotter bits so training by HR doesn't really work so well. In the bit by the river where it's cool I was way below target at a better pace. Humph. Only another month of so of the heat!

Monday Aug 1, 2011 #

Note

Didn't go to work today, couldn't get out of bed.

Pretty sure it's all in my head.

Countdown to holiday and end of era: 34.

In other news, I can now pick up both kitties for a short amount of time. They don't like it very much, but they don't put their claws out either!
