After reading some stuff on the internet it's highly probable that I overdid myself with respect to working and running and my concussion. So paring it back a lot this week - might be wasting a few weeks of quality but hopefully not feeling so desperately depressed. So this morning, I didn't set the alarm, then Rob joined me for a short jog, and it was really warm and sunny. We just did a loop around the bottom and my legs actually felt pretty tight, but it was such a gorgeous day that it didn't really matter. Really good to have company too.

Orienteering 36:17 intensity: (1:05 @1) + (2:20 @2) + (25:04 @3) + (7:19 @4) + (29 @5) 4.1 km (8:51 / km) +124m 7:42 / km
ahr:164 max:184 6c

Warm up jog from Neils to the start of the loops, then hanging 6 streamers. Didn't read my control descriptions and hung three in the wrong place, but very visible from the site. Excited to be out in the forest!

Orienteering 41:41 intensity: (18 @1) + (1:19 @2) + (2:49 @3) + (28:51 @4) + (8:24 @5) 4.41 km (9:27 / km) +100m 8:29 / km
ahr:177 max:187 spiked:19/20c

Loop course. Four loops with a minute or so in between, supposed to be run fast. There's now quite a bit of storm damage and so fast was a relative term. My flow wasn't great but improved through the exercise, just as my legs were getting worse. They're not up to much "speed" it seems. All in all, a bit of a fail to really train anything, but found all the controls without much pain.

Run back to take Anna to the Train Station. Bye bye my favourite Kiwi!

Orienteering 1:03:30 intensity: (19 @1) + (2:13 @2) + (51:06 @3) + (9:52 @4) 6.01 km (10:34 / km) +118m 9:37 / km
ahr:163 max:178

This was much better. Neil had planned an exciting looking corridor, and it was great to concentrate on some fine navigation without being able to see all the huge stuff for miles. Had my usual problem of trying to get successfully down a vague slope, and bobbled off the line just before the stream. Took a while to figure that out, then hopped back on. Fell off again near the end, again on a stream, but righted myself after a little confusion. Really good training!

Note

Rob and I did a slightly unintentional State Park tour today. First we took in Above All, which was as bizarre as it sounded on the internet - a derelict radar station from the Cold War, now mostly used for lighting fires and taking drugs by the local kids.

P1280565

Then we went to Mohawk Mountain, where we drove to the top, but there wasn't really a nice circuit to walk round. So we almost gave up but tried Sunny Brook on the way home, and did a nice circuit round the woods there. There was a great frozen lake with the sun setting behind it, but my photos don't do it anything like justice.

Then our brake light blew and we bought a replacement at this amazing shop:

Note

Anyone any idea how accurate these two lists of CT state Parks are? Rob and I are hatching a project.

Also, does anyone have an old mountain bike for a tall Rob sized chap that they'd be willing to sell?

I underestimated just how soggy it was out there today when I ran into work. I got very wet, and was very cold in the meeting as s result of not having carrier enough clothes with me. Luckily George is a wimpy Australian and I am wandering around in his big warm blokey jumper now, all toasty. Glad to run in, wouldn't have made it out today it not.

Updated control count, now it looks like I will be doing some O' stuff over the next few weeks: 520/2000

Adding fake controls to my automatic control counter, because I've been lazy filling in the control box since I got Quick Route and that is waaaay quicker than going back to add them all. Thumbs up to the target feature! (For those of you that don't read Cristina's log, accessible through clicking a day on the calendar view of your log).

Running 40:29 intensity: (35 @1) + (1:02 @2) + (19:24 @3) + (17:12 @4) + (2:16 @5) 7.15 km (5:40 / km) +153m 5:07 / km

10 x 90(30) round East Rock. Fun! Hard work up hills but felt like I was working hard and getting somewhere. Snow all gone and lovely and dry again.

Note

Man. I am knackered today. Cold run plus full day at work - apparently not good.

Note

So, struggling to figure out what to aim for this year. I am still very much into orienteering being the most fun, but it seems the competitive season here is over before it's even started wit S/M/L and Team Trials so early. I don't feel like I'm going to be prepared to race at peak by then. A tiny portion of me is saying marathon in my ear, but training for that is a bit boring. Any ideas? Is there a good marathon length trail race in the autumn? That seems like a not bad compromise. Plenty of off-road training so hopefully not too boring.
7 AM

Running 49:44 intensity: (23 @1) + (26 @2) + (9:23 @3) + (37:29 @4) + (2:03 @5) 8.34 km (5:58 / km) +209m 5:18 / km
ahr:175 max:187

Final run in the snow before the evil rain comes and turns everything into a grey slushy mess. Everything was still lovely and powdery this morning, and I even found myself some virgin snow. Had to run a bit hard in places to squeeze in under 10 minute miles, as the hills were pretty slow going.

My Falcons still aren't comfy for any length of time. Bah, silly shoes. The woods looked beautiful though - shame it'll all be gone tomorrow. Saw a girl out on XC skis too, but she wasn't going anywhere fast.

Someone overdid it a bit (a lot) yesterday. Oopsie!

Note

Snow! Time to go running!

Strength 15:00 [1]

Some serious car pushing and snow shovelling. Not our car, I hasten to add, we weren't silly enough to go anywhere. But we passed many people who were on our way to sledging. Sledging was awesome but the little bounces made my brain hurt, so I had to stop.
9 AM

Running 1:35:37 intensity: (22 @1) + (9 @2) + (41:13 @3) + (53:53 @4) 12.87 km (7:26 / km) +457m 6:19 / km
ahr:171 max:182 shoes: Inov8s

East Rock Winter Round. There was a good four inches of snow on the ground when I woke this morning and it was still coming down so I set out for a long run. It was awesome! The first five mins on the road were unpleasant, very windy and not able to see much, but once I hit the woods it was fab. All my hair froze up, and I pulled out about 7 of my eyelashes when I de-clumped them after half an hour. After that I decided to look like Old Father Time for the rest of the run. Did the three highest bits of East Rock (I think, at least as high as you can get without fence climbing) and was just beaming the whole way. Starting to tire on the last one, but then heading downhill and home. Still snowing heavily, and my tracks from the way out were almost gone on the return. Yey, winter at last!

I am so happy to be in one piece and fit enough to do this. Yey!

Note

This Primary is certainly keeping me amused. Perry is officially out but backs Gingrich, and a recount in Iowa leads to Santorum in pole position (but the whole thing is essentially declared a tie).

How much money is going to go down the drain in the fight between Mr 15% tax rate Romney and the man with an amphibian for a name? I thought it was over, but maybe it's just getting started.
6 AM

Running 32:10 intensity: (1:04 @1) + (1:28 @2) + (26:10 @3) + (3:28 @4) 5.74 km (5:36 / km) +88m 5:12 / km
ahr:159 max:178

Easy run into work as the sun came up - another mega lab day even bigger than yesterday today! But the first 90 mins have gone well so hopefully that's a sign of things to come.

Today was the first day I felt like I might be able to run fast, but I didn't as I was carrying a bag and I need all my energy for work today. Maybe tomorrow, but almost definitely at the weekend. Got my check up at trauma today, will ask them about the weird crampiness on my right foot when resting but otherwise I think I'm good to go.

Wednesday Jan 18, 2012 #

7 AM

Running 21:49 intensity: (38 @1) + (2:44 @2) + (16:53 @3) + (1:34 @4) 3.8 km (5:44 / km) +48m 5:24 / km
ahr:157 max:179 shoes: Grey Saucony Excursion

Easy jog into work - I've been feeling better after exercise but I also had to make it in early as have two big days of work ahead, so this seemed like a good compromise. Crossed roads religiously at crosswalks and decided in general that as everyone ignores them completely (and half the new buttons for pedestrian crossing don't actually ever give you a walk signal) continuing to jaywalk is the safer of the two methods.

Note: this is because the police report about the accident said it was my fault for not crossing at a "well lit" (one streetlight, the same lighting as the rest of the road) crosswalk, despite the fact the driver was driving a silent car at 6pm with no lights on. But I'm the reckless one, apparently.

Note

Okay, may have spoken a bit too soon, very tired now! Am going to set everything up for big experiment tomorrow and then go home I think. Then rest day from running while I do looong experiment tomorrow.
9 AM

Running 42:56 intensity: (40 @1) + (3:42 @2) + (28:17 @3) + (10:17 @4) 6.92 km (6:12 / km) +143m 5:37 / km
ahr:162 max:176 shoes: Grey Saucony Excursion

Yey! Slushy run in the teeny bit of snow that fell last night. The far side of East Rock looked lovely, and the best thing was that no one else had been there.

Running is feeling fine, haven't tried any speed yet but nothing feels knocked out of place. I made it through all of work yesterday too with only a slightly shortened day, so things are definitely looking up.

Running 36:22 intensity: (31 @1) + (15 @2) + (14:02 @3) + (20:07 @4) + (1:27 @5) 5.88 km (6:11 / km) +145m 5:30 / km
ahr:170 max:185 shoes: Grey Saucony Excursion

Easy jog round East Rock with a little hill in the middle. Breathing was tough as it was super cold out there (-8 C or thereabouts) which probably accounts for the HR beng a little high. Slightly concerned that I'm now going to crash halfway through my full day in the lab, but I felt so much better after running yesterday that I wanted to get back into the habit. Today is Martin Luther King Day so I don't HAVE to work, but I kind of need to - really behind on things for a Jan 24th deadline now.

ahr:158 max:182 11c shoes: Inov8s

Jog round course A at Bald Rock with Rob. And the good news is - it felt fine! It was dead cold so breathing was a struggle uphill, but that would have been the same any day. The only slightly weird thing is that my previously only slightly discoloured calf is now very blotchy with big bruises. But it doesn't hurt or anything so that's good. Very grateful for Rob's company. He is a natural with a map. It's pretty cool.

Rubbish walking 1:30:00 [3]

Walk into town to try to buy more Jigsaws, but the Yale version of Barnes and Noble is a bust for that kind of thing. Then went to see The US version of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and it was okay, but they added weird details that weren't really needed and glossed over some relationships that are important for future films. I think I actually prefer the Swedish version, less attempts to humanise Lisbeth. The fact that the killer chose Enya for his killing music was pure genius though.

Note

A bit of walking around today and some work for about 4 hours. Wasn't with it by the end of lab meeting, but pretty sure our Boss wasn't either :)

Just got the invoice for the ride to the hospital in the ambulance. $1049. My health insurance covers this no problem, but just imagine being uncovered. Almost half my monthly take home wages just on the ride to the hospital! I imagine I'll never see the bill for the overnight stay, but holy crap.

If Cameron manages to do this to the NHS he should be sent to jail.

Rubbish walking 40:00 [3]

I managed about 4 hours at work today and then walked home with Rob, and all of that was great. Then we had an exciting altercation with a guy pulling out of a driveway that nearly ran over us again. He stopped, we started going, then stopped straightaway as we realised he was looking at his cigarette and not at us at all. We told him to look more carefully and he started yelling at us to Shut Up, and then the fireman (we were just outside the fire station and they were all hanging out) took our side and he skidded off.

Sometimes, all I want to do is curl up in a ball till someone takes me back to Scotland. This place has a ridiculously large proportion of utter douchebags in it. I was hyperventilating a bit by the end and glad the fireman were nice.

Yoga 30:00 [3]

Half an hour of yoga. No weird pains or funny muscle pulls, just a sore right shin. The shin's a nice yellow colour now though so nothing suspicious, just got to wait for the bruise to go away.

Wednesday Jan 11, 2012 #

Note

Today I walked around the block a few times (laundry joy) and did some housework. I also read a whole New York magazine, which is bonus points in the return of focus stakes. Screens and any kind of organisation are still very hard though, but progress is definitely being made.

Tuesday Jan 10, 2012 #

Note

I went to work for a bit today. Managed to piece together everything I was halfway through, and coped fine with finishing a couple of them off. Luckily I did take good notes, because Thursday afternoon is still a blank, so I guess it'll stay that way. Not coping fine with everyone talking to me and dealing with e mails though. That kind of higher order function is definitely confused. So back to Gossip Girl!

Monday Jan 9, 2012 #

Rubbish walking 20:00 [3]

Bit of walking round the neighbourhood. Physically almost no problems at all now. Mentally my focus is definitely still off, and from reading online about the length of my concussion I would expect that for another couple of days at least. Starting to get frustrated with not being able to do basic tasks like read a book (crappy magazines are fine though, as is washing up - bah!), but need to chill out and not think like that. It will come back soon.

Note

Break through, my brain is capable of doing jigsaws. That's good, because even Gossip Girl is getting on my nerves a bit now.

Rubbish walking 20:00 [3]

We drove to Hammonassett and walked along the beach, then had lunch in Madison. It was lovely but I am now really tired. It doesn't look like work will be a good idea tomorrow.

Saturday Jan 7, 2012 #

Rubbish walking 25:00 [3]

It doesn't feel like training but I guess I should record things as I recover. A slow stroll through East Rock with Rob. It was really lovely and warm and my back had eased up completely by the end.

Friday Jan 6, 2012 #

Note

Well, at least I can't feel my achey feet anymore! I was struck by a Prius yesterday evening and have spent the whole night in hospital being majorly concussed. No massive damage elsewhere, but my right calf hurts and my back feels a bit twisted. My CTs etc were entirely clear and I've not had any pain meds since I came off the drip at about 7am.

It feels like a real fuck off hangover. But hopefully there will be no lasting damage. Concussion is seriously freaky though. I've slowly being rebuilding the week in my head. I hope I made good lab notes :)

Thursday Jan 5, 2012 #

Note

Both my feet are now achey today. I've never had foot problems before. Should I try different shoes? It's not a plantar ache, it's the top of the foot. Easy day or day off today - depends how I feel after work.

Note

Sign up if you want to join me for O' on my birthday this weekend (Sunday 8th).

Early morning long run. -10C, feels like -18 according to weather.com today. I wasn't actually that bad though, except I realise now that my nose was very cold, as it's hurting in the warm. A bit sluggish but a spectacular morning. As I suspected, there was a path by the river as Anna suggested, but the water company were not about to let us actually use it. Bah, humbug.

Not sure whether today was intervals or survival training. When I left the house weather.com said it was -2 outside, but felt like -9. When I hit the back straight I realised why. There was an icy gale blowing down it that completely took your breath away, making all out pace impossible. The sunny home straight was much easier, but my legs killed as they tried to recover from being pretty much anaerobic for 100m. So, not a fast session, but a tough one I'm glad to have finished, as at one third through I was doubting my ability to do so. Session was 400 (75) 400 (75) 600 (90) 600 (90) 800 (90) 800 (90) 1000 (90) 400. Up to full interval distance at last!

Would anyone like to plan me some O' this weekend for my birthday, considering it doesn't look like snowing any time soon? As it's a special occasion some streamers out would be a real treat! I'm willing to drive anywhere within reason except Ansonia probably, as I know it a bit too well. Obviously others welcome for non-snow related fun.

Easy East Rock cruise. Absolutely splendid morning, Boris missed out! Not much to report, other than I realised when returning through East Rock that no one else in East Rock was going to work today, so I probably shouldn't either. Sorry Boris :( I guess I didn't have to run at 8am after all...

Hill Walking 1:30:00 [1]

Starting off the New Year with a hike up Bear Mountain with Rob, and Anne & Naeem. It was a beautiful warm day and the way down encompassed some serious strength work on the Welch trail. Really stunning day.
