Note
(rest day)

Pretty tired from racing and not sleeping very well for two nights so happy to take a day off.

Nice to have a quiet day with Emma and get some rest ready to push on next week.

Trail run (warm up) 37:44 [3] 3.44 mi (10:58 / mi) +218m 9:10 / mi

Warm up for the race.

Jogged from the hall to the start of Leg 4 then up some forestry road which I was told was the course. Route I followed was well marked to assumed it was the route but after a while it obviously was marking for something else! So race would be completely blind.
1 PM

Fell run race 29:04 [5] 3.37 mi (8:38 / mi) +395m 6:19 / mi

Devils Burdens Leg 4.

Probably last race for Westies so keen to make it a good one. Gregor and Mark handed over the lead of the race so took of like a stabbed rat. Not the best strategy but keen to get out the start area strongly and be moving well as the other teams ran in down the same track. Plenty early start runners to pass which was handy to see the route. Just one navigational error taking a wrong turn on the outward track but quicky corrected to only loose some seconds.

Initial climb was very runable but tough having started so hard- bad mistake really. Once out onto the open hill it was more enjoyable, nice wind assisted run up and over East Lomond. Easy nav off the top with no clag. Safely down to the last check point and relief that I was still well clear so could cruise the last forrest track to the finish.

Time was not great, a mix of going out too hard then maybe easing up at the end once we had it won and not really my sort of race- short and fast running- but a win for the team so job done.

Road run 21:10 [1] 2.18 mi (9:43 / mi) +69m 8:50 / mi

Easy road miles from home before travel to Glasgow- just very easy to keep the legs turning over ahead of race tomorrow.

Trail run 1:11:56 [3] 8.53 mi (8:26 / mi) +166m 7:57 / mi

Lap of Derwent.

Easy run to check rh calf but also keen to try and keep the miles up so decided on a lap of the lake taking it easy in road shoes to save the legs a bit.

RH calf ok and no worse for the run, just need to be careful with it, particularly in low drop shoes and with hills.

Note
(rest day)

RH calf/ achilles a bit tight/ sore last night so day off today to give it some rest. A shame as would have like a good hill day but better safe than sorry.

Lower leg muscles are taking a bit of a battering as they get used to more running instead of biking.

Trail run (field run) 37:19 [3] 4.14 mi (9:01 / mi) +146m 8:07 / mi

Easy running in the fields.

Took a while to find a good sized field free of the sheeps so bit of a faff to start. All fields water-logged so quite slow going.

Legs fine and glad to be on soft ground.
6 PM

Trail run (reppin) 1:10:50 [5] 4.52 mi (15:40 / mi) +511m 11:36 / mi

KAC reps in Castlehead woods.

15x45sec uphill efforts, jog down recovery.

Good tough session on slippy ground. Moving well and happy enough.

Could feel tight rh calf/ achilles on effort 10. Never got too painful but definitely not 100%. Guessing that rh calf just a bit overworked running in old inov8's and on slippy ground uphill. Day off tomorrow as a precaution.

Road run 39:33 [3] 5.1 mi (7:45 / mi) +190m 6:57 / mi

Isel loop.

Just steady road miles. Seemed ok, no problems, usual feeling of slowness on the road but better than last week. Legs feel heavy on the road, need to work on this, guess it'll come.

Felt fine after yesterday, no ill effects and lh knee seems fine.

Awareness of both achilles but just that, no actual pain- need to stretch calf muscles regularly.

Easier week this week, aim for 50 miles but bit less climbing to be on song for the Burdens.
