Sunday Jun 15

running 46:00 [3]
Rode over to Belair NP and ran up to the upper waterfall then back down to long gully kiosk and along the creek. Coming down from the old train station reminded me of a few stair rep sessions I used to do up that hill. Legs felt a bit heavy at the start but after a little way felt fine, and it was great to be running there again on such a beautiful day.

Saturday Jun 14

Note
(rest day)
For some reason just felt bad today. Tired, and legs felt like cement just walking around, so dialled in another rest day.

Friday Jun 13

cycling 50:00 [3]
Down to Morialta before run.
orienteering 38:00 [3]
Running around a school with a few controls out for the future stars of SA orienteering. Did some sprint practice with Sus, V, Lauren and John, doing a mass start and then some staggered starts and things. Stuffed up the first leg before I got the scale, but after that it was good and way fun. Lots of standing around between sprints, so that the session took over an hour in total.
strength (knee strengthening) 5:00 [3]
Really wanted to do a proper set today as I haven't done any of this for ages. However, felt too self conscious in front of the others to do it properly, so just did a few little jumps and things to get back into it.

Thursday Jun 12

strength (home) 25:00 [3]
Feeling really tired from lack of a good night's sleep for a long time. Eating lots of Fruchocs, minties and Gingernuts to compensate - at least I won't be short on carbs!

Wednesday Jun 11

cycling 2:00:00 [3]
From Bundaleer to Clare. Beautiful morning, but the wind wasn't quite as helpful. Legs felt suprisingly OK.

Knee struggling a bit and feeling sore.

Tuesday Jun 10

cycling 3:20:00 [3]
Rode from Wilmington to a bit south of Jamestown with 20 min break at Booleroo and a coffee at Jamestown. Had a mega tail-wind component helping me and it was mostly downhill, which is all just as well because had I been going the other way I would probably have been crying on the side of the road as dusk set in.

Monday Jun 9

orienteering 40:12 [3]5.5 km (7:19 / km)
SA middle distance champs at Manawarra. First control was a long leg into the vague stuff. Knew where I was for 70% of the leg but then must have drifted to the right and hit some semi-open veg. Erred a bit then guess where I might be and was a little lucky to get the control having only lost 1.5-2 mins. Then ran OK with only minor wobbles until the next longish leg into the vague stuff. Once again concentrated most of the way and knew where I was but then something didn't fit so I doubted myself then totally forgot what I was doing and lost myself. Tried in vain for a while to work out where I was before running off to a definite attack point several hundred metres away and heading back to the control. Then ran OK again until 2nd last control on edge of map. Had to run to the left of a creek so bolted out down the left of a creek that was just off the map and about 30degrees in the wrong direction. Was feeling good physically so bolted, but was off the map by a good 200m and had to run back to the right creek. A bit pissed off at myself for that mistake as I didn't do what I had identified as something I should be doing when leaving the control - using the direction of nearby features rather than my compass when leaving the control, as my compass work tends to lead me astray whereas creeks and fences don't lie.

Although I made mistakes not too disappointed with the run. I definitely need to work on the concentration and also having a clearer plan for the leg - looking at the map afterwards it seemed so clear compared to when I was racing. Positives though were that physically I felt like I had some speed back again, for the first time in a while and probably the best since I started orienteering again. I can also tell my map-reading on the run is getting a little better, though still plenty of room for improvement!

Also did another 2 hour parent-pace hike.
