Sunday Aug 17

orienteering 54:00 [3]
This session was supposed to be 15 min w/u, 20 mins with 10 mins intervals then 15 w/d, but it didn't really happen. Rode out to Shotover to run there with a map for the first time ever. First just ran around mostly on tracks using some of the permanent markers as places to go. I worked out pretty quickly that while some of the yellow was fields, some of it was so covered with crap that I didn't even try to get through. I really think all European maps should have a scale, contour interval and season marked on. I also worked out pretty quick that I had to go pretty slow for my map reading to keep up with me. So after 12 mins I started to head down to Brasenose wood, but managed a nice 90 degree error in the process, which I failed to notice for close to 500m. So then I finally got to the bit where I wanted to run - nice and white on the map, but in reality I was running slow. Part of this was just me being totally wimpy, but I think in many places fast run was a bit optimistic. I couldn't believe how many spikey things there were in this wood - holly, hawthorn, brambles, nettles and a few other things mean my skin is still tingly nicely. Instead of running in a straight line I would run, stop, turn around and try a different way. Not exactly the high intensity intervals I had planned. Anyway, did another 10 min warm-down via shotover and that was it.

I can't help but think about the terrain intervals I used to do in Adelaide - a nice bit of scrappy pine forest with lots to lift the legs over and nothing to hurt you. I might start looking for somewhere else to do intervals next time.

Some notes though - my orienteering is very crappy at the moment. In a way it's good because it means the fact that I haven't done much running lately isn't going to matter, as I can hardly navigate faster than a walk! I definitely have a lot of things to work on over the next few months, so I'm looking forward to doing a few more races.

Elsfield-HCS-Boarstall-Brill-Oakley-Stanton-Elsfield. For the first time in a long time legs didn't actually feel too bad. Quite a nice ride as well, though the wind picked up a little for the second half. I think it's the first time I've ever ridden straight to Brill and back again, but it might happen a bit more regularly from now on.

Thursday Aug 14

running 38:00 [3]
Ran over to South Parks and 4 times up the slope. It felt great to be out in the sun for what feels like the first time in years, but again physically felt generally not very good. Lungs also a bit sore again.

Note
Had planned to go running tonight but it was pissing down with rain and I felt exhausted. Hence moved the rest day foward one.

Tuesday Aug 12

strength (gym) 50:00 [3]
weight:62kg
Feeling a bit run-down today, and struggled to make it through my 5 min warm-up on the rowing erg. Took it pretty easy as a result.

Monday Aug 11

cycling 47:00 [3]
Had planned a longer ride but I managed to lock my keys in the house. By the time J had got home and let me in there was only 45 mins of daylight left! Really great ride though - just went out to Whytham for something different, and was sort of pushing it out of the corners and up the little inclines etc.
