Orienteering 1:21:29 [3] 1.44 mi (56:36 / mi)
shoes: inov-8 X-Claw 275

@ Cunningham falls.

This was a tricky weekend. 1) Vince promised me that he'd come to this one since he skipped the last one and this is the last one of the year, 2) Jeremy was out of town on business and 3) I really wanted to try this again because it was on this course last year that I tried my first advanced course (where a. I saw a bear and b. didn't find any controls on my own, I just bumped into Sydney who led me around, pace counting & attackpointing for me, so I wanted to see if I could see and feel my year-on-year improvement in orienteering.

Regarding the lack of Edda-care, I was ready to give up on 3) and I mentioned to Vince that I thought I might take Edda with us and I'd do white with her and he could do a course on his own and immediately Vince said - I'll watch Edda, you run. This was an unacceptable solution. I also simultaneously sussed out the white course during the week with Jon to see if Edda could actually traverse the white course and it did not seem likely (stairs and all). So I found a caregiver for Edda & Vince cheerfully agreed to do Orange. I settled on Green - what can I say? I was optimistic.

We arrived at the start and checked in and it was pouring. Jon was like - maybe you should do Brown? I should have taken that suggestion. Actually, what I should have done in retrospect, was to downgrade all the way to Orange and go on that course with Vince. That would have been enough.

We probably started walking to the start during the strongest downpour of the day. We were soaked completely almost immediately. Because I had only a set time for the Edda's childcare, I felt like I couldn't delay our start. That we couldn't wait out the rain. Vince, ever so indulgent to me and generally a good sport, started to complain on the way up. I could hardly blame him, the trail was a mini-river and it's a long way. We were very, very wet. There might have been lightening. People were headed back down the trail having given up even before they got to the start. I regretted telling Vince about last year's bear on the drive up and he kept saying - we are soaking wet and we will also get mauled by a bear.

I kept saying, let's just get to the start and reassess. We kept going. We got to the start and sat on a log and contemplated out next move in the rain. Someone came up (I don't know his name, though I kind of recognize him) and said it's tough terrain out there, not very runnable and then Vince looked at me and said - mom! it's raining, there are bears and this guy here says it's not runnable - let's go home. I told the guy that he was not helping my cause with my offspring and he helpfully said to Vince, you just got to go for it, it is what the day has presented you with. Vince was still not quite convinced. I said - let's go find your first control and reassess. He said fine.

We didn't find the first control. We started some light bickering. We backtracked back to the trail so he could go back to the car and I could try to restart my course. We meandered aimlessly each thinking at various points that the other person was navigating. Anyways, to make a long story short, we decided to stick together to do a mix of my course and his course. We decided to only head downhill and not go uphill. We found one control on my course, we tried pretty hard to find one control on his course to make it even, but that didn't happen. Since he didn't find any controls on his course, he didn't want to go download his data - but I insisted because it's a courtesy to let everyone know you are out of the woods and I said I'd go first with the download and he was like - at least you found one! I sighed. On the ride home, he admitted that he was glad that he went even though it was kind of terrible. I asked him if he wanted to go get some lunch. He said, I just want to go home if that's OK. I said, yeah that's totally OK.
