Saturday May 31

MTB-O race (JWOC fundraising rally) 1:26:30 [4] 15 km (5:46 / km)
ahr:153 max:185
Started at Fourways High. It was a score event with questions at each point instead of controls. I enjoyed it but the traffic made it pretty stressful especially when I tried to cross Witkopen. I found a few extra closed roads that weren't shown on the map, got chased by a few dogs and managed to lose my bike computer but otherwise it was fun.

Thursday May 29

Running (Sasol wichwood) 21:50 [3] 3.26 km (6:42 / km) +40m 6:19 / km
ahr:156 max:83 shoes: Adidas Response
Run with Alex. My average heart rate seems low for the amount of effort I put in. My legs felt good but I felt like I'd eaten too much before I went even though I hadn't.

Wednesday May 28

stationary bike 20:00 [2]
Easy ride while watching some IPL cricket. Cool to train and watch tv at the same time especially when I have a lot of studying to do. Biology exam tomorrow.

Monday May 26

Running race (Inter-school cross count) 26:07 [5] 4.1 km (6:22 / km)
ahr:183 max:199 shoes: New Balance 477
At Sandringham.
I hate that route. It's very scenic and most of it is proper cross country but it is really tough. People have been complaining that the routes are too short so they lengthened this one a bit. We ran down a long hill across a field and up a 40m bank past the start before we did the normal route. It didn't add much distance but I was dead after the hill. I think the less serious people don't bother running when it's cold so I was at the back for the first 500m. It's really fun running past the start when you're coming last but at least I pace myself so I pass people later on. My legs felt heavy and I felt slow. I had to work hard to keep going. It drizzled a bit but it was perfect weather for running.
The first junior girl came past me again. She's a machine. She already had about a 2 min gap after 1.5km.
I came 30th. Last race of the season unless I go to district teams

Sunday May 25

Event: Groenkloof MTB-O

MTB-O (MTB-O) 1:43:00 [3] 15.71 km (6:33 / km)
ahr:157 max:185
At Groenkloof.
My first MTB-O event. I really enjoyed it. At the start control I met a lady who was battling to decipher the map. She asked if she could ride with me. I wasn't too keen but said I didn't mind. She had done the capestorm trail run earlier. She turned out to be a med student and was only slightly fitter than me. She soon got the hang of the easy navigation but she rode with me the whole way. It was fun riding with someone and we got on well. I didn't always take the optimum routes but didn't make any mistakes. It started raining near the end so it was quite cold. I saw some zebra and wildebeest.
It was quite a popular event so hopefully we will have a few more.

Saturday May 24

Cycling 15:19 [2] 2.8 km (5:28 / km)
ahr:134 max:167
A warm up ride with my dad. We went through the park then up royal oak. My legs aren't feeling great. I'm looking forward to my first MTB-O event

Thursday May 22

Cycling (Primrose-Bill Stewart) 39:48 [3] 11 km (3:37 / km)
ahr:147 max:171
Av14.4 mx42.3
I enjoyed it but felt pretty slow. My legs are tired which I suppose is to be expected

Wednesday May 21

Running (Park,Rhett's house) 25:28 [3] 3.6 km (7:04 / km)
ahr:164 max:184 shoes: Adidas Response
Legs are a bit tired but otherwise I felt pretty good.

Tuesday May 20

stationary bike 25:00 [1]
ahr:123 max:147
Took it easy. My right quad is rather sore.

Monday May 19

Running race (Inter-school cross count) 19:51 [5] 3.5 km (5:40 / km) vdot: 32.3
ahr:184 max:199 shoes: New Balance 477
Bez Park.
Wow that was a tough route. There were tons of hills and the grass was pretty thick. The last 200m was a hill/embankment which killed my already sore calves. We started first so a few of the junior girls came sprinting passed which was rather sad but it was cool to see how good they are. I came 32nd

Friday May 16

Running race (inter-schools Xcountry) 8:45 [5] 1.6 km (5:28 / km) vdot: 31.4
ahr:175 max:187 shoes: New Balance 477
At Gillooly's
It wasn't quite what I expected. I was looking forward to a good 3.5 to 4km route. The guy explaining the route said it was 3.2km but once he had explained it I knew it was about half that. I started fast and I felt that Ihad a bit of an advantage on pacing. I pushed hard but as always I think I probably could have pushed a little bit harder. If we trusted the organisers distance judgement then I think we broke a few world records. I came 25th.

Wednesday May 14

Running (Park- Rhetts) 25:49 [3] 3.6 km (7:10 / km) +60m 6:37 / km
ahr:181 max:161 slept:8.0 shoes: Adidas Response
I went at about 5 and it was very busy. I took it easy because my calves and feet are quite sore.

Monday May 12

Running race (Inter-school cross count) 21:26 [5] 3.7 km (5:48 / km) vdot: 31.6
ahr:177 max:193 shoes: Adidas Response
At zoo lake again. Was 35 seconds slower than last Mon. My legs were tired so I couldn't get my heart rate up. It was 185 average last Mon and only 177 today. I didn't get a chance to warm up which was annoying. I knew I hadn't run well and that there were more girls but I was shocked when the lady put my sticker by no. 63. It turns out she skipped a few pages. When I went back later she had changed the numbering but I was still only no. 47. A few girls I beat where lower 40's. My teacher wasn't interested and we had to leave so I'm not sure where I came. Qualifying for districts is going to be pretty much impossible now not that it was likely.
I can't wait to run at Gilloolys on Fri. At least they can't make us run on the pavement

Sunday May 11

Event: Gauteng Mountain Marathon Championships

Orienteering race (Mountain Marathon) 1:14:19 [5] *** 4.7 km (15:49 / km) +140m 13:46 / km
ahr:181 max:193 10c shoes: New Balance 477
Mogales gate.
I was expecting it to be tough so at least it wasn't too much of a shock. I'm a bit out of practice so I planned to take the road to 1 but the road off the main road just wasn't there or was very indistinct so I ended up walking over rough ground anyway. Going straight would have been so much quicker. The other W16's had the same problem. After that I went smoothly until 6 to 7. I crawled up the hills and felt like I was going no where. To 8 it was a toss up between going in and out of valleys or walking at the bottom in bad vegetation. It was in the wrong place but I didn't waste much time. I crawled out of the valley to 9 and took a slow jog across the only flat piece on my course to the last control. My average heart rate was pretty high. Jess H beat me by 7mins. Salome was third.
My legs are going to feel lovely tomorrow at cross country

Course 5 - Splits

Friday May 9

Running (Sasol wichwood) 22:17 [3] 3.26 km (6:50 / km) +40m 6:26 / km

Tried to start a bit faster and pushed up the hill. My calves are a bit tired.

ahr:185 max:199 slept:8.0 shoes: New Balance 477
At Zoo Lake. Certainly not the most scenic route on the perimeter pavement. As usual I was coming last for the first 400m before people started walking. I had an ok run. I paced pretty well but think I need to start a bit faster. My calves were a bit sore towards the end. I pushed hard in the last km. It was my first race as a senior so I was ok with coming 21st although private schools weren't there so I'll probably drop a few places next week.

Sunday May 4

walking 30:00 [1]
Walked with my parents to buy a newspaper. It was rather chilly. I hope my legs are strong for tomorrow

Friday May 2

Thursday May 1

Running 27:14 [3]
