Orienteering (Forrest) race 2:16:40 [4] 14.86 km (9:12 / km) +450m 7:59 / km

TioMila 2018

Just tried to not trip over and get trampled on the way out of the start, everyone was going pretty quick and i was pretty small compared to most of them. Made it to the start flag fine. Didn't really infold my map until i got to #1 about 6 mins later. Was running really well and felt pretty strong, would like to say i was nailing the nav, but for the first 6k i was just following the person in front, and when i did look at my map every now and again id mess up and slide a bit further down the train.

Completely mucked up one of them, should have just followed the train i was in. Lost ~3mins just joggin about. The group i had been in was long gone by then and so i just slowed down a bit and began to run my own race. Grabbed a drink at the drinks station and headed out for one of the many longer legs. Started running just behind this guy who i knew was going to far to the right but stuck with him for a bit and when he go a bit confused, led him back in the right direction. Got with another train coming out of that control and used them for a good 4k more, pushing pretty hard at this point to just stay with them uo the hills and through the terrain.

Mucked up #18 again, this time relying on the pack too much, one guy went off to get my control but i didn't notice, my brain just wasn't working by then. Was completely on my own then and managed to get the control reasonably well after hitting the road. Next one was a short one where my bearing was bout 60 degrees off. The slog up the next hill was brutal and loads of people past me as i was walking up. For the last technical leg i just walked vagley on my compass without any sort of plan, Found it pretty much by luck.

the next few along paths were pretty tough, i didn't really know what i was doing and was looking forward to some much needed sleep. Luckily picked up the correct map for Duncan and sent him on his way.

My talk with Graham was pretty poor as well, got my age a year off and gave some pretty poor answers. Very much enjoyed my food and shower and getting some sleep was pretty nice.

Overall the whole atmosphere and running was great fun. Just following people through the terrain at the start was good. Need to think more about gels and how i'm going to cope with that kind of effort. Although it's probably more than anything i'll do in britain for quite a while.

Nice bit of the open course to try to get me more in tune with the map etc. With Frank, Charlie and Sunley. Very nice and was technically pretty clean.
