Run / Hike 1:02:02 [3] 6.02 mi (10:18 / mi) +119ft 10:07 / mi
slept:7.0 weight:117.7lbs shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2020)

LoCO FIT workout at Davidson Mesa, with ridiculous wind (20-25 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph).

- Ran one mile to warm up.

- Two-mile time trial to set a baseline for this session: 16:57 (8:53 into the wind / 8:04 tailwind).

- Two-mile tempo run (just getting in some extra mileage): 17:17 (9:01 / 8:17).

- Ran one mile to cool down.

Run / Hike long 3:01:16 [3] 16.04 mi (11:18 / mi) +860ft 10:45 / mi
slept:8.0 weight:117lbs shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2020)

Today's assignment: run for three hours.

Portions of this felt OK (the downhill sections, mainly), but the last 30 minutes, in particular, felt like a grind. Really questioning if I want to do something like this twice for a 50K...

From home -- Daughenbaugh / Warembourg Pond / Dutch Creek / Coal Creek / Mayhoffer-Singletree / a bit on 66th since the Cowdrey Draw trail is still closed. And then back the same way. I walked a couple of times while eating a gel.

Run / Hike 1:02:38 [3] 5.56 mi (11:16 / mi) +243ft 10:49 / mi
slept:8.0 weight:117lbs shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2020)

My training plan has switched over from miles to time for the long-run days. I was supposed to do three hours today and one hour tomorrow, but I have a zillion things I have to do today -- so I flip-flopped the plan.

One hour at a very easy (SLOW) pace -- it was windy and I wasn't feeling great, for some reason.

Friday Mar 6, 2020 #

Run / Hike 13:00 [3] 0.7 mi (18:34 / mi)
slept:8.0

Walked to & from the rec center. A lovely day (60s).

Yoga class at the rec center.

Administration 1:00:00 [0]

Admin work for tomorrow's RMOC Ski-O meet at DTR (annual waivers, email follow-ups, OE2010 files, start cards, etc.).

Thursday Mar 5, 2020 #

2 PM

Run / Hike 40:00 [3] 2.0 mi (20:00 / mi)

Had to make a visit to the Auraria campus -- I took the bus to Union Station and then walked to the Tivoli Center. Then walked back via Larimer Square / Timbuk2 store.

6 PM

Run / Hike hills 1:00:15 [3] 5.03 mi (11:59 / mi) +328ft 11:17 / mi
slept:7.0 weight:116.5lbs shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2020)

LoCO FIT spring training.

- Ran 0.75 to warm up.

- Rec center hill sprints x 10 (up for one minute / down for two minutes).

- Ran 1.25 to cool down.

Very excited for DST to start next week...

Wednesday Mar 4, 2020 #

Run / Hike 59:17 [3] 5.52 mi (10:44 / mi) +219ft 10:21 / mi
slept:5.5 weight:117lbs shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2020)

Weekly Runners Roost group run -- up the Hwy 36 bike path to Davidson Mesa, around the west & north sides of the mesa, one lap around Harper Lake, and then back down McCaslin.

With sore calves from yesterday's interval workout...the long first mile+ uphill into the strong headwind was miserable.

But the rest of it was nice.

Tuesday Mar 3, 2020 #

Run / Hike intervals 54:33 [3] 4.92 mi (11:05 / mi) +138ft 10:48 / mi
slept:7.5 weight:117lbs

I sat through one of the world's most mind-numbing conference calls for eight hours today (having to look & be "on" with a mandatory webcam the whole time). But, along with all of my remote co-worker friends, I still felt immeasurably grateful that I didn't have to be there in person.

First session of LoCO FIT Spring Training 2020!

- Ran a quarter mile to warm up (since I was running late after an errand & dropping off my ballot...).

- Ins & outs at the arboretum x 5.

- Ran one mile to cool down.

Note
slept:3.0

Stayed up really late on Saturday night getting ahead on homework for the week, and then stayed up 'til ~4am Sunday night into Monday morning to finish an urgent work task before flying to Houston for a work meeting.

(For the third time in a row, my VP has scheduled this in-person meeting right on top of a HUGE twice-yearly deadline that a few of my co-workers and I have -- which she knows about. Really inconsiderate and annoying...)

Anyhow -- we got the last-minute option of cancelling our travel and attending the meeting remotely on Webex (due to coronavirus concerns). Rather than pulling an all-nighter to get packed and then being trapped in a boring-ass meeting for three solid days...I immediately jumped on that option to cancel. Yay.

Still felt semi-comatose all day long at work, on just ~three hours of sleep.

Strength / Stretching 1:30:00 [3]
slept:8.0 weight:116.9lbs

Saturday Feb 29, 2020 #

Run / Hike long 2:43:34 [3] 15.0 mi (10:54 / mi) +294ft 10:42 / mi
slept:7.0 weight:116.5lbs shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2020)

Today's training plan assignment was 15 miles.

I would've preferred to do the Dirty Bismarck loop, but the western half is still closed (due to mud).

So I did laps at Harper Lake & Davidson Mesa instead, which wasn't too bad -- it's flatter, there's a bathroom at the trailhead "just in case", and it's easier mentally to break it into one- and three-mile chunks.

The only downside was the annoying northwesterly wind the whole time...

I went at an easy pace, and it mostly felt OK -- my feet hurt a lot towards the end.

Friday Feb 28, 2020 #

- Ran 0.75 to cool down.

Orienteering race 2:13:37 [3] 5.7 mi (23:27 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Turq)

SWSW Day 9 -- Classic courses at First Water.

I went up the wrong reentrant to get to #2 after following the dry wash for a while; overshot / hooked into #10; and should've cut the corner near #11 -- but otherwise this went well and I was happy to finish the week with a good race.

Orienteering race 2:07:00 [3] 4.54 mi (27:59 / mi)

Two-hour Score-O at Needle Vista.

It was hard to get motivated to get started in the rain...but I heard Sverre say he was only going out for an hour, and I thought that sounded like a good approach ("I can tough it out for an hour..."). I ended up staying out for the full two hours plus an extra ~seven minutes. :-P

I went clockwise and made a big, dumb error going up the wrong reentrant to #33 / OR.

Orienteering race 1:57:00 [3] 4.14 mi (28:16 / mi)

Two-hour Night-O at Needle Vista.

Counter-clockwise. I started & finished OK but wasted a bunch of time when I lost contact with the map on my way to #40...

Cholla Chaser at Catalina State Park.

Other than my bone-headed miss at the first trail junction on my way to E, this went well. (I powered up the hill to get ahead of some people, and I think I had brain failure as a result at that first trail junction...ugh.)

However, going down the super-steep hill to A -- and then climbing right back up again to B -- probably wasn't the smartest plan. E-F-B-A then trail back to the intermediate start control would have been better.

I lost a few minutes (and positions) on my way to #3, when I had to stop to yank out several cholla segments.

But, then I was able to gain a few positions by passing people on the run in from the GO control.

Classic courses at Catalina State Park -- Red.

I executed #1 and #2 well, and then had a 45-minute disaster looking for #3. :-| I think I thought I had gone too far (when I really hadn't gone far enough), and then back-tracked prematurely. It was rocky and cactus-y, which slowed me down, too. I pretty much NEVER ask other people where I am on the map, no matter ow lost I am, but I resorted to that today and finally found the control. After 45 minutes.

The rest of the course went fine (minor inefficiencies here and there), and was fun.

Javelina Hustle at Box Canyon (Greaterville, AZ) -- Long course.

I didn't realize (or forgot?) that there were two courses, so I followed the wrong pack out of the start. Duh. As a result, I took an inefficient route to #1.

Then I blew it big-time on #6 (I probably stopped concentrating because it looked "easy"). Hooked into #7.

For #10, I didn't want to deal with all the up-down on the more direct route, so I went wide, up the parallel reentrant and then across the top.

There was an unmapped fence that confused me near #14, so I wandered a bit there.

Great weather & enjoyable course.

Travel day.

I was lured in by the "Javelinas de Tubac" advertisement at TUS baggage claim, so I decided to go check it out, along with the Tubac Presidio museum / state park.

I had also planned an easy run on the Anza trail, but I was running out of daylight.

Went to dinner instead. A 90-minute wait? Whut? Oh, it's Valentine's day... Was able to sit at the bar right away (which I usually avoid, but it wasn't too cramped and I didn't have to chat with anyone).

Weekly Runners Roost group run.

East on Cherry Street to the Coal Creek trail, out to Community Park & the top of Andrews Lane, and then back the same way.

I wiped out on the ice on my way back (I was zoning out...), but luckily didn't hurt myself -- just banged & bruised the same knee I landed on at the Oatmeal Festival 5K a few weeks ago.

Excellent coyote & owl sounds in the open space areas. Excellent Thai dinner with a few from the group afterwards.

Warmup.

Run / Hike race 1:01:59 [3] 6.18 mi (10:02 / mi) +250ft 9:40 / mi
shoes: Saucony Peregrine (2018)

Old Man Winter 10K in Lyons.

There was a lot of new snow on the trail segments (which was like running on slippery beach sand -- my calves are still sore, two days later), and the road / dirt road stretches were snow-packed. Even though it was actively snowing, there wasn't any wind and it was warmer than last year -- really pleasant conditions.

The only downside was that my nanospikes kept getting dislodged from my shoes (maybe because of the deep snow? I haven't had that problem with the spikes before). I had to stop FIVE times to adjust them, which wasted a lot of time. After the second time, I thought I would just ignore it, but they got so twisted that they were scraping the insides of my ankles with every stride.

But at least I got to race -- the 100K bike race was cancelled after ~20 miles (due to icy roads / dangerous conditions), and the 50K bike racers never even got to start. Ouch...
