First day of LoCO FIT Spring Training 2018! I should have brought a headlamp -- it was already getting kinda dark when we started, and I'm always paranoid about stepping in a hole and rolling my ankle... :-P

- Jogged one mile around Harper Lake to warm up.

- Two-mile baseline time trial (8:32, 8:16). I was supposed to do 2 x two miles, but by the time I finished the first one, it was colder, darker, etc...

- Walked a bit and then jogged one mile to cool down.

Finally home at 1am this morning after an airport snafu yesterday afternoon...

My previous trips to Tucson's Southwest Spring meet were all with Troy (2008, 2010, 2013 & 2015). So I wasn't sure I could actually enjoy this trip on my own without him, and the first couple of days had some sad memories and difficult moments. Just to torture myself, I dredged up some old Tucson photos from 2008 (Desert Museum) & 2013 (Catalina State Park):

TucsonBUT -- overall I had a fantastic time. Sharing a house with Cristina, Melissa & Lukas was fun and it was so great to have company at night rather than hanging out alone and ruminating. Cristina gave me a couple of mini-projects that kept me occupied. :-)

Also, a big silver lining was doing everything on my own schedule, rather than being rushed by someone impatiently twitching to leave every meet as soon as possible. So I opted to do longer courses without worrying about how much time I might take, I paired up with a beginner for the Reid Park training, and I got to hang out and socialize as long as I wanted after finishing my courses.

I also especially enjoyed getting to know (or know better) new friends at the escape room / lunch / dinner / Bisbee touring (Barb, Mary Jo, Ethan, Vilppu & Keegan), and going out to a fancy-ish dinner with Amy, John & Sverre.

:-)

Orienteering race (Red course) 2:13:05 [3] 5.35 mi (24:53 / mi) +562ft 22:37 / mi

Got lost looking for #1 -- not a great way to start out. My tracks don't look too disastrous here, but they don't reflect how much time I spent just standing still, turning in circles, looking around and trying to figure out where I was. :-\

And then I *totally* lost contact with the map on my way to #2. Luckily I spotted a line of claim markers near the end of that leg, and that helped me get back on track.

Otherwise, I mostly did OK navigation-wise except for some small glitches (e.g. heading off too far down the wrong trail after leaving #4, and losing the trail I was trying to follow to #10).

But I was moving VERY slowly overall -- I hate steep, loose, rocky downhills, and there was a lot of that on the early legs. Also, I stopped several times to remove cholla balls from my feet / ankles and to take photos.

I had fun, I just didn't do very well (although my AP graph shows a fairly consistent pace overall -- consistently SLOW).
