"Wild Goat" course at Jim Baker's new Dell Gulch map in Buffalo Creek.
I had very little time to pack up all the registration stuff, get ready (sunscreen / watch / shoes / etc.), and walk over to the start, and I was VERY flustered because I thought I was going to miss the mass start (and I definitely would have, but they started at 10:08 instead of 10:00).
I opted to just latch on and follow the pack as long as possible (specifically, Neal & Sverre), rather than navigating on my own like I normally try to do. That lasted to #1, and then I was mostly doing my own thing, with fewer and fewer people around me as I went along.
I was feeling the hills, for sure, but I tried to push myself to stay ahead of others. I thought I might have a chance of beating Maiya, but no such luck. I knew I wouldn't have a chance of beating Bridge. :-)
After slowly fighting through a fairly miserable deadfall area on Loop 1 (#4 to #5) and Loop 2 (#2 to #4), I decided to go around that stuff for the rest of Loop 2 and Loop 3.
Loop 2: Bad route choice to #2 (I think I was trying to avoid the up-down? and take advantage of the trail? probably could have just followed the reentrant down). Wandered a bit looking for #4 (I was near it and didn't see it...).
Loop 3: Spotted the wrong knoll next to the trail, veered too far left, and went down the wrong reentrant to #1. Skirted too wide around the green slash on my way to #3.
Not too hot, very fun.
*EDIT: In retrospect, after looking at the skip analysis and reading a comment from Dmitriy, I realize I made the dumbest possible skip choice on Loop #2. It would have been much better to skip #2 (take the trail all the way to #3, and then I would've had a very short distance to go through the green slash to #4), or skip #4 (take the trail west from #3, and then follow the powerline north). Seriously kicking myself. Apparently I had tunnel vision. :-\
