Orienteering 2:18:08 [3] 6.53 mi (21:09 / mi) +594ft 19:29 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

Training course at Pelican Bay.

PERFECT WEATHER! Sunny, clear, and warm enough for short sleeves.

I started a few minutes after the pack. Right after the mass start, as I was asking Mikell to rescue some punchcards from blowing off of my registration table, a new guy asked me to explain how to get to #1. Having to think through a coherent, helpful answer on the spot forced me to think through a coherent, reasonable route choice rather than just winging it on the fly. :-)

About halfway to #1, one of the Berzelius teams came running back toward me yelling "bear!" and I saw it running off into the aspen grove. We waited for a few minutes...and then moved on. Excitement!

I was with Amy for a few controls, and then occasionally saw Ken & Carol, Duncan, and the Berzelius teams. But I ended up doing most of the course from #5 onward on my own.

I finally felt like I had a good day -- just some minor bobbles (overshot #1 by a bit and #4 by a bit more; got lucky at #5; and took a meandering route to #9).

Very fun!!!

Hot yoga at "Ahimsa" in Laramie. I'm glad I got up early for this. The studio was nice and I liked the instructor -- I would definitely go back.

Orienteering 2:00:00 [3] 4.85 mi (24:45 / mi) +738ft 21:38 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Navy)

Training course at Diamond Bay.

A round of hail & lightning moved through about 30 minutes before our scheduled start time. We thought the storm had passed and that we were in the clear.

So we started. About an hour later, the sprinkles started...and then the torrential rain...and then the hail...and then the REALLY SCARY LIGHTNING.

I waited out the initial rain & hail under a rock ledge. The rain let up for a bit, so I moved on, but then it got worse. I tried to remember the "don't get struck by lightning" protocol and crouched on the ground for quite a while -- totally saturated from head to toe (the jacket I had with me is just water "resistant", not a true rain coat).

Once the lightning seemed to have passed, I decided to just head in -- my hands were so cold I could barely move my fingers, and I was generally miserable from being so cold & wet.

Luckily, John & Cory picked up a bunch of people from the road. It had stopped raining by the time I saw John & Amy's vehicle, so I just jogged back.

Orienteering Training at Granite Planite (last year's Green course).

Probably at the expense of getting all of my "real" work done this week...I had all my food, clothes & gear packed last night, so I left on time and got up to the training location with more than an hour to spare.

We had a small group (13 total) and perfect weather.

Error at #3. Inefficient to #6. Huge dumb wandering mistake at #7. Slightly less huge but still dumb error at #8.

#9 - 10 - 11 OK!

Not sure what happened on the way to #12.

#13 - #18 went well -- finally.

Not my best outing... :-\
