Orienteering race 1:28:27 [3] 4.53 mi (19:32 / mi) +839ft 16:37 / mi
slept:7.0 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2019)

Red course at Buena Vista.

I think this is my favorite map in Colorado. And it seemed GLORIOUSLY runnable after the recent couple of weeks in Italy & France...

Gøril & her niece from Norway both ran the Green course, so Maiya was my main competition (among females) on Red. I didn't think there was any chance of beating Maiya, so I stopped to take a bunch of photos out on the course.

As it turned out, she only beat me by 47 seconds. DOH! If I hadn't taken all those dumb photos... Oh well; it's fun to have pics of other runners for the RMOC page.

Overall, this went well. I swung out kinda wide to #2; not sure what I was thinking on the way to #5 (bare rock to boulder to saddle would have been 100 times better!); slightly overshot #15 (I looked back and saw John punching it); and then totally blew it on #16 (ready to be finished, obviously not concentrating, and trying to outrun Dave).

I tried to run as much as possible but definitely lost steam on uphills, especially in the last third of the course. But we were at 9,000+ feet...

The only downside of today was the excruciating FOUR-HOUR drive home. (Should be ~2.5 hours.) OMFG.

shoes: Salomon Speedcross (2017-Turq)

Night-O at Buena Vista.

Weather was pleasant -- not cold at all, as it has been in previous years.

I had a *splitting* headache (mild migraine?) from just before I started working at the registration table until I went to bed. I felt kinda spacey (it was hard to find words, at times), but I don't think it affected my orienteering.

...except for when I aimed off from #4 as if I were going from #5 to #6. Luckily I figured it out before it became a total disaster.

I also was kinda disoriented approaching the finish -- I ended up way too far north, at our parking / camping area.

Very fun!

LoCO FIT workout. I was a millimeter away from snoozing my alarm this morning...but I'm glad I didn't, and glad to have this workout over and done with!

- Ran a half mile to warm up.

- Tyler Ave hill loop x 5. Our assignment is usually to maintain a consistent effort on the uphill and the downhill (so the downhills are supposed to be fast); today the assignment was as-hard-as-possible effort going up, and recovery effort on the downhill.

LoCO FIT workout @ Daughenbaugh / Warembourg Pond.

- Ran 0.8 to warm up.

- 3 x 1.5-mile loop @ 10K pace, with walking recovery back to the start of the loop. As usual, I didn't want to do the last loop, but I forced myself to start and it actually turned out to be my fastest of the three. Avg paces were 8:54, 8:50, 8:48.

- Ran a very short stretch back to my car to cool down.

It's always tough to decide what to do first when I get home after a hot run -- cold shower or a delicious, icy-cold, horchata-flavored recovery drink? Tonight I went with the horchata.
