XTERRA Castle Rock 20K trail race.

I'm not really sure why I signed up for this -- I haven't done a long run in almost six weeks (~11 miles on 6/24). So I approached this as a supported training run rather than as a race (I had 12 miles on my training plan for today anyway -- perfect!).

Also, since my stomach has been quirky since last Thursday, I gave myself permission to bail after the first 10K loop if it acted up.

Good news / bad news -- no stomach issues whatsoever (despite my questionable decision to have spicy Thai food for lunch yesterday), so I had to cruise past the finish and keep going for the second loop.

I was feeling good -- going at a comfortable pace, only walking on the steeper uphills -- until I tripped on a rock and rolled my ankle *really* badly in mile 8. I saw stars. I had to sit on the side of the trail doing some lamaze-style breathing for a few minutes, due to the pain. And I skinned my knee. :-\

I hobbled to the next aid station (which was only about 100 feet away) and considered quitting. I could barely talk (since I was trying not to cry), but the volunteers helped me rinse the dirt out of my knee scrape. Then I "walked it off" for about a quarter mile.

I was able to continue running, but I was much more timid on the rocky parts and definitely slower overall. The weather also started to feel really hot in the last 3-4 miles.

Ultimately, I was nearly last at #53 of 70 overall -- but still 1st out of three for F45-49. Yay! (No former Olympians in my AG this time...) I got to pick a prize from an already-picked-over table of tchotchkes -- so I grabbed a handful of Honey Stinger gels.

My ankle is slightly swollen and I can tell it's going to be painful for a while.

Stomach was very painfully crampy all night -- that feeling of "I'd probably feel better if I threw up". WTH?! Ain't nobody got time for that...

6 PM

Run / Hike race 37:31 [3] 4.0 mi (9:23 / mi) +205ft 8:57 / mi
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline (2019)

Run for the Cure at Eldorado State Park.

This race had been on my radar, but I didn't decide to do it until I heard Charlie would be there with his nephews and JP, as well as several friends from my running group.

It was an out-and-back course, with all the uphill in the second half -- and not actually in the state park, as I had assumed. My stomach settled enough to get through all four miles at a reasonable pace.

It was fun, with good food & beer afterwards, and the world's longest awards ceremony (we stuck around for that since Charlie had gotten 3rd in his AG).

I was #6 of 8 in my age group -- behind Constantina Dita (#2) and Nuța Olaru (#1). Good grief. ;-)
