Early morning easy in Geneva. Round the UN then along the front before a foray into the city centre and back along the front. Absolutely great fun, nice route and lots of stuff going on. Quarantine successfully avoided

OO cup day 4
Spiked the first 4 before making quite a hefty mistake on a really short leg to #5 - parallel error and poor relocation to blame. Flowed through well before a miss and some hesitation at #9 and #10. Absolutely nailed a downhill diagonal slope log through super technical terrain to #12 which was mint then carried on powering along the slope for the next few.
#16 was in a super techy section downhill so went careful but swung left too early and and eventually relocated off #17. Not great but could have been much worse and meant I spiked it as an actual control. Then missed #18 by under 2 metres! - found it soon tho.
Went over my ankle twice in quick succession about 1k from the end so just jogged it in down the hill, no point pushing through.
Just such an awesome forest, peachy and super runnable terrain with loads of detail and great visibility. If I had to create a perfect area it wouldn’t be far off that.

Will be missing day 5 as we are escaping to Switzerland tonight before flying home tomorrow. Obviously it’s frustrating but we’ve had 7 full days of proper foreign orienteering in great forests so no complaints - feel like we’ve very much been living off borrowed time! Either way, a great success overall.

OO cup day 3 - 4th
Took a big round route for the long leg to #4 which worked well. Spent from then till #9 completely alone which was a bit weird but understandable given the start time. Small miss on #9 but nothing major.
All good till #14 when I was on track but was totally thrown by the path I landed on - seemed way too big so started having doubts and stood still for ages. Then missed the control.
After this it went a bit to pot, missed #17, lost +90secs on #18, then was all over the place to #19. Wasn’t paying enough attention to the compass and thus did a very good impression of an M12 with all the consistency of david luiz at Arsenal. Oh well, still very enjoyable if very slow going

OO cup day 2 - 2nd on M20
Really happy with today. Had heard it was very tough and techy so just went for a cautious approach, making sure that I was checking myself often and playing it safe. Made a wee miss on #4 then took a properly rogue routechoice on the ‘long’ leg to #7 round the path which seemed to work well.
Caught up a dutch guy and led him through the next wee bit before dropping him for the flat forest section. Still navving well but made a wee miss looking for a re-entrant so he caught me up. Fine to the finish after that. Overall, very pleased with that - roll on first start tomorrow

Didn’t fancy the 1.1k with 175m climb to the start as a warm up so did some loops at the bottom and walked up. Not every you can see mont blanc from the start tho!

Orienteering 49:46 intensity: (19 @2) + (15 @3) + (20:28 @4) + (28:44 @5) 6.87 km (7:15 / km) +164m 6:28 / km

OO cup day 1 - 5th
Started off in a mostly open bit. Tiny little scrap at #2 before throwing away 40 secs at #5 just being a muppet. Then made my biggest mistake trying to find a very well concealed ‘depression’ at #8 which I was slightly too high for and faffed thereafter.
Then I was running towards the forest downhill and managed to run straight into a line of barbed wire just on top of a ruined wall. Hit it at thigh level and hurt like a .... but the pain soon went away. Forest was very rough/technical and even though I made no mistakes I probably lost time at points just from hacking through grot. Finished fine then lifted up the massive rip in my trimmies to see 4 big cuts so went to the first aid and canned the warm down. What an eventful first proper event!

Model on adjacent area to yesterday. Lovely area again. Not so great nav with some scraps and 2 bigger mistakes but got better as I went. Absolute joy to run through such nice forest

Running 39:32 intensity: (30 @0) + (3:17 @1) + (25:51 @2) + (9:44 @3) + (10 @4) 6.6 km (6:00 / km) +134m 5:26 / km

Well well well...
Grace suggested running down from the area to our house, having assured me she knew which paths to take and where we would emerge on the route we did on Friday. Good one.
After about 2k it emerged we were clearly not on track so then spent the next 3.5k going through terrain on the side of the slope, heading roughly south and down. Only one really disgusting bit of horrible veg before eventually emerging into the fields above hotonnes. Most of it was really nice forest.
Think we broke just about every rule in the mountain safety book - no map, no compass, no phone, no food, no water, wrong shoes, middle of the day and the list goes on. However naturally I fully blame grace for everything. After all, it was her idea. Just goes to show, 3 jwoc medals doesn’t necessarily give you basic map reading skills!
