Mapping 1:55:10 [1] 7.61 km (15:08 / km) +131m 13:56 / km

Collecting controls after Silver Valley WJR. Much shorter than putting out as Rachel and Reid helped collect some in, and I only did one loop for the rest. Meant I was carrying 20+ controls by the end, but well worth it as my feet were getting very tired.

The event itself seemed to go well. It's a tricky area to plan longer courses on as there are only really two nice bits of forest, and the rest is pretty green. A couple of visiting Finns had nice words to say about the courses and the forest though, and there were plenty of new people who all seemed to enjoy themselves. Great!

I was very grateful to have the wooden shelter for registration and download. In true "event-organised-by-Ben" fashion, it was a wet day for the runners (with a mix of snow and rain). Fortunately for me, I stayed dry the entire day! The sun came out when I set off to collect the controls, and I got round in just a T-shirt :)

Control setting for Silver Valley WJR.

Not the most optimal route choice, but I prioritised getting the off-trail controls out first, and did the on-trail ones later.

It was great to be in a "nice" location where no gripples were needed, and I could put out all the controls the day before.

Downhill skiing 4:59:01 [3] 40.91 km (7:19 / km) +5046m 4:31 / km

Best day of skiing at Cypress I've had!

It was a day of firsts:
  • My first ever free day of skiing! Andre is ill, so Carla had a spare pass. Yay!
  • Skied in trees on Sky Chair for the first time. Not so terrifying thanks to there being nice snow rather than just ice.
  • Did my first double black (Top Gun) which was really fun. Not as steep as double blacks on other mountains, but still plenty technical (and full of trees).
  • Successfully skied backwards for significant periods. I don't get up too much speed, and do lots of reverse snowplow (rather than parallel turns), but it makes the green runs a lot more interesting.

A great day of skiing with Carla and Rene. 10/10.

Swimming 15:00 [3] 0.25 km (1:00:00 / km)

Foot still doesn't feel right to run on, so went to the new UBC pool. The pool is very nice; my swimming technique is not.

Time includes rests while actually swimming (the slow lane is quite a sociable place). Does not include hot tub times afterwards.
