Walking (Mowing) 1:00:00 [1]

Calling it a warmup - had to get the back yard mowed for the graduation party tomorrow before I left...

Orienteering race 17:45 [4] *** 2.4 km (7:24 / km) +90m 6:14 / km
spiked:13/14c shoes: Integrator

Sprint at Ellison Park. 1 second ahead of Rob S - Nice matchup _ was slower on 7 legs than him, we tied 3, and I won 5. Several of his faster legs were by 1 or 2 seconds though.

I felt good throughout, nice and consistent.

Error was on 6 in that I climbed the hill and avoided control not thinking that it was mine, and then stepped back several feet to get it when I checked the map... 10 seconds at most though.

Score-O at Ellison Park. I had the most points at 625, and before they doinked with the penalty, that was good for first place.

Was with Vince when we followed the bad train to 181 and then 188... (I was evaluating when to jump in and everybody overshot it) Looking now - I definitely see that the map which looks great at 1:5000 looks faded at 1:10000. Dick/Mike/I shared messages about this effect and it seems to be something that should be planned for.

The map is at 1:5000 scale, and so it seems without any change, printing at 1:10000 scale fades the contours by 50% - they almost completely drop out.

I think better contours would have helped us all get to 188 in a more direct manner... But it is what it is - I enjoyed the course.

Swung through to 192, and it was odd - I noted one of the early leaders of the train riding down the spur from 192 away from where we wanted to go - I cut down and reached the trail - he caught back up to me again later, but it must have cost him 30 seconds or so. He did make a good cut for the shack to get 165.

After that, I crossed the road and swept up 163, 162, 168, & 169. Headed to the trails and 191.

Sergey made an error and stayed low at the trail climbing the ridge. I think I heard him fighting up that much steeper side of the hill later as I was on top.

Kept on to 197, 196, and crossed the stream to cut off some of the trail to 187. From there, I stayed on the ridge and reached the clearing. I stayed on the right side and skirted it until an obstruction forced me out into it, and I crossed very close to the control.

Climbed the hill up and then took the trail to 170. Here the fun began - realized I had gotten every control, and was on a nice trail down hill to the creek - so I got to run down the whole thing. Enjoyed that, and was only thinking of running and good foot placement, no navigating.

Kept on to 164 and then 186 and had like 15 minutes left.

Thought it was a good amount of time to get to 189, 193, 167, 157, and then have an option for the last 3 controls. 8 minutes later or so I made it up the hill to 189 and threw out the option, but still thought I could reach 193 and 167, and maybe 157.

193 was down a craggy bank, and the distance just got to me. 167 was easy enough, but I realized that time was up.

Returned from there 3:59 over.

My "reach that far and hard ones" strategy paid off with high point winners, and if the intended penalty was really 10, I can enjoy that. It was good hard work, and reasonably fun.

Walking (Mowing) 1:00:00 [1]

The rest of the yard still needed mowing, so that's my warmdown... (along with the trim, awning setup and blowing off the trimmings...)
