Orienteering race 17:31 [4] 2.7 km (6:29 / km) +25m 6:12 / km
spiked:10/12c shoes: New Balance 479 - V3

GVP Sprint. First control not my best. Like Stina, I decided for the first time this year I'd run in shorts, and 12 seconds into the race realized I run into the woods that had a poison ivy ground-cover...

Thought from the map that the first control would be beside the road, but when I came out of the woods I didn't see anything. Checked and saw two rocks and thought that would be into the woods a bit and so jumped into the woods on the other side thinking they'd be just into the woods - but no luck.

Took a bit to move around and find then beside the road as I first thought. [should have been more precise with the compass, first leg movement, and map reading]

Rest of the race was fine - essentially following handrails.

Distracted by the bench and side trail at 6.

Splits seem to show that the side trail was a few seconds faster to 7 - I missed it, Stina didn't, and the further bridge was faster to 8 - I took it, Stina didn't.

Distracted by similar vegetation at 10, and perhaps took the long way around the game.

Orienteering race 56:20 [5] 9.7 km (5:48 / km) +65m 5:37 / km
shoes: New Balance 479 - V3

GVP Trail Challenge. Nice course and effort, seemed to pace myself well.

The cat-tails at 5 threw me a bit, but everybody else seemed to be going around them, so I followed.slight mis-step on way to 10 as I almost followed the line to 16, but Stina went just in front at that point.

Bigger gaff as I stopped at 16 on the way to 11, and groaned when Stina didn't, and I realized the error.

Lost one runner on the way to 16 (for real) when I went right and he went left. Perhaps the earlier experience helped there...

Morning Run (pavement) 24:30 [3] 3.0 mi (8:10 / mi) +35m 7:53 / mi
shoes: New Balance 479 - V3

Wasn't sure I'd run the morning before an event, but thought yesterday's long walk while mowing didn't quite do the job of getting me ready, so a quick run was in order.

Walking (Mowing) 2:00:00 [1]

Interesting observation - I had noticed hornet activity under some compost in the garden and sprayed the other day. Today as I passed it, the area was dug up and a reasonably large nest was apparently eaten by something.

Searching suggests badger or skunk, and since I don't think we have any local badgers, I'll go with the skunk... Well - thanks Mr skunk - just don't hang out, ok?-)

Morning Run (pavement) 32:25 [3] 4.0 mi (8:06 / mi) +40m 7:52 / mi
shoes: New Balance 479 - V3

Started modestly, and picked it up a bit for the second and third miles - didn't know it was that slow to start, or that fast after, but that was a good effort. 4th mile pulled it back a bit more from fatigue than not. 8:47, 7:46, 7:49, 8:02
