Orienteering race 41:44 [4] ** 5.1 km (8:11 / km) +135m 7:14 / km
spiked:10/12c shoes: New Balance 479 - V4

Enjoyed the green course at Cobbs Hill.

Generally pleased - I had a long training run the day before, so I figured I wasn't worried about the time / speed, but I wanted to make good decisions and avoid another mispunch event.

1- tried to get too cute on this one and avoid the largest part of the hill. Unfortunately, there was no way to cut over to the side road without passingf through the OOB for the utility space, and I ended up cutting along the side of the hill. (The utility has apparently put in a nice ramp from their parking lot to the park...) ((You can see that on routegadget...)) So this leg was too long, and in examination after, didn't really cut out much climb at all.

2 - Felt good, but I clearly didn't hear anything about only trails, and did not see the printing on the map. Oddly, I believe I was operating in tunnel vision - thumbing from one control to the next and only interested in the map and contours between the points. I was shocked to see the printing at the end.

3 - nice cut over. Used compass to make sure I went the right direction in the maze of trails.

4 - but then apparently didn't use it well enough on the next control... I believe I missed the first branch, and thought I was taking the right of two as intended at that intersection when I was actually headed on the wrong trail meters ahead. Like that I corrected out of this error without too much stress.

Then I missed the trail up to the top of the reservoir. Odd because I went back and looked hard and still didn't see it, so figured it had to be further. Then realized it wasn't there, so I climbed the steep bank to get up. (and skirted the construction site that surprised me at the top)

I did take the north side of the reservoir.

5 - feel this was a great control. I did climb to the top - only a bit of climb, and then I had a nice path and descended right to the control. Time doesn't show it, but it seemed snappy to me.

6 - another good control - I took the East side along the road, and then dropped down. This split was 3rd best.

7 - and another good control - #2 time.

8 - went right around ball field out of respect for the diamond, and that probably accounts for the very slight delay.

9 - seemed to be straight, probably a bit of fatigue.

10 - planned all along to go around, but the trail was inviting, right there. Looked up and thought it didn't seem so high, and went up it. post-analysis suggests it was only a couple contours higher than around, and a lot shorter. (so making up for the 1st control)

11 - really nice control for me - 3rd fastest leg even at the end of this course with my fatigue, and I think an optimal line.

12 - down the hill and to the finish.

Morning Run (pavement and trails) 1:08:50 [4] 6.87 mi (10:01 / mi)
shoes: Vibram Treksport

Wow - instant new favorite long route...

Ran roads - 1.56m / 14:19 over to the Penfield Rd entrance to Corbett's Glen.
Ran the length of the Glen - 1.24m / 12:20, and found a trailhead out of the park to one of the side roads - looks like Dale Rd.
Ran down that and Penfield Rd to the entrance to Ellison - .45m / 4:17.
Then ran down the trail to the creek, cross the park, over the hat, and back out of the park - 3.07m / 32:00.
And the hill back to house - .54m / 5:54.

And a great workout...

Morning Run (pavement and trails) 35:42 [3] 3.5 mi (10:12 / mi) +80m 9:31 / mi
shoes: Vibram Treksport

Easy version of the new route. 4:40 and a half mile downhill to Ellison, 25:11 and 2.5 miles around the park, 5:51 back.

Nifty catch after coming off the hat - somewhat muddy around the base of the hill curving around to the main trail, and my uphill / inside / right foot slipped down and to the left as soon as it planted. My Left foot wasn't recovered to come down, and I was able to pick up the right enough to re-plant it - sort-of a hopping motion.

Kind of acting like the frequently seen little hoppy-toads over there;-)
