Orienteering race 52:17 [5] **** 4.5 km (11:37 / km) +185m 9:38 / km
spiked:17/shoes: Icebug Spirit 4

National Championships Middle Red-Y at Letchworth East.

Rain pretty much held off (for the second day), and we got everyone out at the start.

Down side - I climbed out of the starting area 4-5 times over the course of the day. Felt reasonable when starting though.

Bobble on the first control. Finally had a GPS track work, and it looks like I was right next to the control, and didn't see it. Perhaps it was behind a tree from where I was standing or something, but I took a 1:45 tour of the area before getting back to that area and finding it.

Worked through (6 on way) 2, 3, 4, 5, and then wobbled getting back to 6.

Clean over to 7, and then a nice section to go faster on the way to 8 - stayed low to the water, swamp, and attacked from a good place under the control.

After that, it seemed the navigation was easier for me, but my legs were suspect. (but no more than everyone else's over the weekend...)

Splits show me lower than average in speed through 14-15-16, though I seemed to do well on the downhill to 17. Made the long run across the field in a respectable 45s (at least as far as I can see;-).

Enjoyed this course, and seemed to hold it together for most of it. Site says 2 minutes of lost time, and that's at most one place.

Same position as other races - behind the other M35+, but still second fasted US qualified, so three silvers. 16 of 30 men on the course, so a better placement overall.

Orienteering race 2:23:27 [5] **** 9.6 km (14:57 / km) +395m 12:24 / km
spiked:17/14c shoes: Icebug Spirit 4

National Championships Long Red-Y at Letchworth East.

Opened 1 along the road and then used the white band to reach NW effectively.

Things going reasonably well at the beginning. Wobble on 6, but good plan (back to trail from 5).

Thought I was lined up well for 9 with a distance and direction, but knew something was up when my stream ended early and there was no control... Took a couple passes to get to where it was.

Then the rails came loose on 10. I really thought I had taken a slow pace, careful line out of 9, and the re-entrant should be _there_, and it wasn't. What followed was a half dozen attempts to re-calculate where I was, and make another go at it. It ended up being above where I started, and I did not climb back up high enough. I'm confident I was close to it the first pass...

Reached 12 by taking the road past the finish area and climbing past 16, trail to trail to trail. (when checking, I did not see an effective way across the large stream and up - that climb looked non-fun.) at least the road and trail was passable grade.

To 13 was straight and contouring around the hillside on the other side of the stream - and directly past 15. There was another control on the edge of the dropoff between 15 and 13, and that was a good reset of position.

Slower and careful to 14 and back to 15.

Around the hill and through the saddle back tot he trail and 16, and then a run in.

I'm figuring 21 of the 26 minutes lost on 9 and 10. And that extra effort hurt my pace for the remaining hour out on course.

Any benefit of being on home-turf is outweighed by manning the start line for the duration... ooch. On the plus side, I did eat my snacks 40 minutes before starting, and never felt lacking in resources. (and drank whenever I passed water).

25 of 34. 5th of 5 M35+, but second USA qualified participants, so another silver.

Orienteering race 20:18 [5] 2.8 km (7:15 / km) +50m 6:39 / km
shoes: New Balance 479 - V4

Sprint Nationals at GVP, red, M35+.

Slight error to 7, veering left (pulled by someone else before I figured it out).

Long route 16-17 on path, forest was probably run-able, but I thought it was only a few steps out of the way.

A few steps to the right of line towards 18.

Site shows I was long to 14, but I don't see or recall any hesitation or navigation errors, I think that was fatigue after the long bridge crossing.

Felt good about it. Last in M35+, but silver in US qualifieds, not the slowest Red course;-)
