Orienteering race 1:05:32 [4] 6.2 km (10:34 / km)
shoes: Icebug Spirit 4

New map at Genesee County Park, red course.

Overall - wonderful - both the location and how I think I did. With a new map, there's no pre-conceived ideas about it.

1 - road route to give time to get adjusted, and look ahead. didn't expect the branch to the face as the side bushes went out to the road;-)

2 - needed to stay sharp on picking which open path / open ground to use to reach there. ended up passing a dad and couple kids after crossing a bridge, and took a right trail one section too early - but at least it was a minor issue, and I realized quickly.

3 - not so sure about the white on the terrain around that area, but found it easy enough.

4 - down the the rail and thought I was headed over at an appropriate angle, but seems I was off a bit. maybe 45s lost there.

5 - woods, road, trail, cutting in - felt good.

6 - took it easy, compass bearing and made it over. [10th, but only 20 seconds from the best split...]

7 - cut through at first, and then took the trail south and along the road to the corner, up and over the hill.

8 - back over the other side of the hill and down to the pond.

9 - took a nice path through the woods to get to the corner and trail, and then climbed along the side of the scruff.

[this was the middle of my back and forth with Tim R. He passed me on the way to 7, I went direct to 8, he caught up and took off, and made it to 9 before me. He went around to the road and pond to strike in for 10...

10 - again a good cut through the woods to get to the road/path intersection, down that trail and then stumped by the lack of any clear path into the field. didn't see a way to get the trail and just went off across the field. I was about to write that there was perhaps an unmapped ditch across that field, because I definitely put my foot out and went a couple down suddenly;-) i see the stream on there - so all is good;-)

I took a consistent path across the field, saw the first opening in the woods beyond, and found the second - and the flag. #1 on this leg by 30 seconds - nice!

[didn't see Tim, and thought I must have passed him route-wise. he said he saw me leaving when he was coming in]

11 - out to the pond, down the trail, across the bridge, and cut through the light green to the creek ok. Hmmm, splits seem to suggest I was slow, but I don't recall a problem here. Think I was taking it easy and collecting myself.

12 - out to the road, down the road and trail and then cut parallel to the creek. the bank pushed me down to the creek and crossed it - seeing the flag.

13 - cut across and was aiming more southerly, but reached the 4 way path junction and decided to take the eastern trail instead. cut over at the end and then up the road. cut in and along the brush to find the control.

14 - thought I was precise about this - and stood on the top of the hill, and saw the path bend down below (E and N). There was a second hilltop in the direction I needed to go, so ultimately I decided it wasn't here, and I'd go to that other hill. control was there. looking at the map, there's a wide spur from the hilltop going NW, and I think there is a second small hill on it - and that is where the control was. Punched it and continued on. Tim caught me and headed out slightly before me.

15 - road to trail, cut across creek and reached trail that runs by the knoll - noticed the knoll and punched before Tim. second on this leg.

16 - trail run with a cut at the right time. Tim catches me on the trail, but I cut better.

17 - quick exit of control and used all that I had left to trail run in and up the hill - second #1 leg;-)

18 - last push to the finish, Rob has better legs than me. beat Tim on both these legs in.

I'm not sure there was an intent to, but needing to make quick decisions about the trails made this a fun event.
