Lake District Mountain Trial - Medium

The culmination of our little training camp in the Lakes. Picking up the map it was quickly apparent there was only really one route choice leg on the whole course which was a little disappointing so had already planned all the routes by the long climb to the top of the band.

Contoured through the rocks to 1 and then up the reentrant and approached the control from the west. The next three legs were just running in a straight line down the hill and was feeling quite good to reach 4 in about 2 hours.

For 5 I had chosen to go fairly straight crossing the valley at lingcove bridge before slightly cutting the corner and aiming for Stoney Ghyll. This was all fine but the descent to the bridge was a grim rocky steep sleep covered in head high bracken. Looking back as we climbed up the other side of the valley keeping higher looked like a good option.

As I punched 5, Zoe Harding appeared and led me down the cold pike descent before disappearing into the distance after rounding blisco. Dropped a little too low on the way to 7 but recovered onto the contour reasonably well and then the big descent into the finish gave me my only split victory over Rob.

Was feeling quite nervous before the race as have never raced over about 2 hours before and wasn't sure about how to approach nutrition. Everything turned out ok though and now feeling more confident for the ROC in two weeks.

Day 2 of Rob's training camp. After relocating to Elterwater took the bus up to Dungeon Ghyll for a run back to the hostel. Went up the band, crinkle crags, cold pike, blisco and then lingmoor.

Took a pretty bad line off crinkle crags and got slowed down a lot by all the rock. Had to stop coming off cold pike to bandage up my hand but then only started to struggle more after the top of lingmoor when it seemed a long way down the track to the end.

Running 2:18:00 [3] 15.6 km (8:51 / km) +918m 6:50 / km

Day 1 of Rob's training camp. Modified Fairfield Horseshoe route.

Drizzle in the valley turned into 50mph gusts and piercing rain on the top of Fairfield where we had to redirect a man down the right ridge. Ascent up Stone Arthur and coming down the valley after Dove Crag to get out the wind.

Highlight: Seeing where Rob had planted a tree 6 years ago just above Ambleside.

Needed to take more food really but underprepared due to flying back from Munich the day before. Double veggie burger in the pub afterwards.
