Orienteering 59:00 [3] 8.7 km (6:47 / km) +100m 6:25 / km

WNL Kenfig

It seems that this race has come around quite quickly since Ben was hyping it up in the summer. It didn't disappoint, the same terrain as 6 months ago but now with thigh-deep "marshes" to contend with.

Had some decent pace at the start and caught Matt up within 4 controls. Then the big decision could have either joined the train and cruised around for the W or back myself on a solo mission. Marcus also caught Matt up here and so I obviously decided to ditch them both and go on my own route.

This went well for about 1 control before I didn't see one of the northern controls and then tried to navigate to it without having a plan. Nor a compass it seems as I was running backwards and forwards E-W rather than N-S as I imagined. Eventually bailed on this and led to a big banana to the next control once I had consulted the omnipotent magnetic deity. I would have been wise to heed his advice again after this as ended up on a completely different ridge to the one I should have been and had to relocate on another control I didn't intend to go to. Quite smooth from then.

All in all, a quality day out and a reminder about why we love (night) orienteering.

Cycling 30:00 [3] 12.0 km (2:30 / km)

Beautiful morning. Gears slipping a little in the big ring but the mechanic sorted it out in about 30 seconds for a smoooooth ride home.

Cycling 15:00 [3] 6.0 km (2:30 / km)

Picked up bike from bike shop. Hybrid route and one of the fastest for a while.

Note

Easy walk around Black Mountains horseshoe. About 20k. We were a bit broken after the last three days! Really good trip overall.

Note

A video close to my heart as an obsessive commute optimiser. I used to cycle this route to work and the best bit for cyclists were the bus lanes rather than any of the other cycling infrastructure.

Orienteering 46:55 [3] 7.14 km (6:34 / km) +100m 6:08 / km

Clydach Terrace

Not feeling too tired after the weekend so tried to push the pace on the last loops. Quality area, map and weather. Thanks for Nick and Ben for planning the training and sorting us out with maps.

Orienteering 56:46 [3] 7.55 km (7:31 / km) +160m 6:48 / km

Llangynidr

Ran part of the JK 2014 M45 course to practice the long leg execution. Did that part well and had a nice 5 minute lie down next to the 50cm boulder at the end. Then carried on with the rest of the first loop bashing through heather and trying to keep going in straight lines to find the right pits. Feeling much stronger through terrain than I used to and no sign of the bonk like yesterday.

Thanks to Mark for helping us with the maps.
