Cloettakampen, middle distance
My worst orienteering performance throughout the spring season. Terrible flow in the orienteering and huge problems keeping direction.
Started off by looking to far away for the first control and passed the correct hill (which was really small) and off to the next one. Realized my mistake and headed back, lost 30". Tried to calm down a bit and ran slowly to 2nd and 3rd.
Tried to speed up to the 4th control but just lost map contact and had to climb a hillside to avoid going through some ones lawn. Went up to early on the hill and fell down on the other side. Realized my mistake and went up and took the control but surely lost atleast 45" on this leg. Tried to remain calm once again but going throught the meadow increased the speed again and I went to far down and was looking on the wrong side of a small nose and had to go through some green shit before I could climb up to the correct nose and adjacent cliff, lost some 15-20".
Ok orienteering from 6 to 9 and then a bit wrong direction going out from 9 but then corrected around the house with garden and through som shit down to the 10 th control where I just couldn't make out the terrain features. Thought I saw the really big rock before I went down the slope, but in retrospect I can see on the gps track that I wasn't even close. Made a few stops and finally after a few sweeps found the control, probably lost 45".
To the 11th control I went down a contour and caught the old track through the light green but looked once again to far in front on a larger rock and headed off, but realized after a while that I was going to far and saw the rocky area on my right side and went back, lost another 45".
To the 13th control I lost some height and knew I was a bit further down the slope than I should have been. I tried to adjust my position and once again thought I passed the huge rock, but once again I misread some other rock. Thought I passed the double rocks but then nothing... continued a bit more and realized I was coming up to the clearing and headed back into the forest. Found the hill and from there the control was easy. Lost just under a 1' on this one.
The last controls posed no problems besides going to far down the slope to the 14th control, lost maybe 10".
Loosing roughly 4' on a middle distance is a total failure. 50% of the legs involved some kind of mistake. Maybe I was a bit tired in the evening after a full work day or my mind just wandered away. I really don't know. One thing is for sure. I seldom do good races in the evenings. On the positive side is that running feels better and better.
