Had great plans for today. After dropping off the bairns at ski school had planned to walk with Paw Paw to Bear Creek Waterfall. Then do my interval session on skate skis. Unfortunately ran out of time, the walk took 3 hours in deep snow. At the end we were informed by snow patrol (not the band) that what we'd done was highly dangerous. We'd ignored a teeny tiny avalanche sign (next to a mountain lion sign of the same size) and walked to the spot a lad bouldering 5 days ago had been consumed by an avalanche. (Never saw any avalanche debris but the lad was all over the Telluride Planet). I then told them we were one of 6 hikers and 20 off piste skiers in Bear Creek so we were totally oblivious to all this. Why didn't San Miguel's Sheriff dept. cordon it off?
Anyway, lovely day. Got back and had 30 mins to ski, so went to Town Park. Snow was extremely sticky and consequently I bailed early. Planned to try skate an hour thirty tomorrow on the valley floor before I get AM from Montrose, but Madison gave me a pass tomorrow. Looks like it could be one of the greatest days ever on the mountain so Alpine it is!!!! Cannot wait. I love snow.
