Definitely approached this with more excitement than ever before, and actually feeling very confident despite the last two months. Backed myself on this sort of route and not-too-long distance.
Felt pretty good for the whole main uphill (10km, 1500m). Splits show I was 100th but I had counted around 50, so not too sure. But was up there with the lead women. Working decently hard but never felt like I was struggling. Breathing wasn't heavy at all compared to those around me, which was weird for me.
Hit the flatter parts after 10km and struggled on the faster parts, especially on the gradual uphills. By 15km, could feel the adductors probably weren't going to last which was definitely impacting my form as I wasn't driving the knee properly.
After the 15th km climb, hit a wall like I've never felt before. Just completely broken and was barely running the flats even. Combo of heat and altitude I think, as I really hadn't gone out too hard I feel. Heading towards the 20th km, the calfs started to go and were struggling on anything flat.
Bit of a death march to 22km and the start of the downhill, but was hoping to be able to run this decently at least as it suited me a lot. Unfortunately the calves were just done by this point and were cramping if I tried to put out any sort of power from the stride - so it was a long, slow downhill to the finish. Had to stop a few times to stretch out.
Overall, just so frustrating. Can't seem to sort of the cramping issues. Can't be bleak about the race as I know things haven't been ideal, but thought I'd be able to give it a better go than that at least. More strength work required, but really need to be better about getting out for 2h+ efforts at a solid pace.
*Had two Maurten gels from Flo which seemed to go down well, no issues at all from that. Must try some before the marathon.
