Orienteering 15:57 [5] 1.95 mi (8:11 / mi)
shoes: Topo Terraventure 2 (red)

DVOA Summer Sprint at Fort Washington. I had a long day at work and drove right up. With a stomach full of some pizza I braved three courses...

This was the non-micro course. Nav was just fine, but a terribly suboptimal route choice between 5 and 6 was the difference a small game trail fizzled out quickly and it was too late to turn back.

Orienteering 16:49 [5] 1.6 mi (10:31 / mi)
shoes: Topo Terraventure 2 (red)

This was the longer of the two micro-courses. I forgot to start my watch until midway, so the distance is approximate. I completely messed up what should have been an easy leg from 2 to 3 by trying to bushwhack and then missing a trail junction. The micro was tough for me, but I don't think I made any huge mistakes with it.

Orienteering 6:24 [5] 0.7 mi (9:08 / mi)
shoes: Topo Terraventure 2 (red)

The final course, incredibly short micro. Did fine except for 5, where I misread the control number and convinced myself I was in the wrong spot.

A fun evening with some rather stiff competition!

Adventure Racing race 1:55:58 [4] 5.5 mi (21:05 / mi)
shoes: Topo Terraventure 2 (red)

Rootstock's Family AR in Philadelphia. First overall with Noah and Rebekah. Jake and Judah tagged along for almost the whole thing; we just lost them with a few minutes to go.

Noah did a wonderful job running or walking for at least 3 miles of it. We moved really well and had a great time. We didn't use bikes, so we did that section as a second foot section. Worked out really well as Noah had gotten in the carrier early on in that section and we moved a bit more deliberately. Super fun race!

Adventure Racing race 3:16:28 [5] 18.0 mi (10:55 / mi)

Rootstock's Twilight AR with Kevin. First overall on a fast, flowy course.

I had stayed around after the family race, and Kevin joined me right around check-in time. There was a map each for foot and bike, with estimated distances around 7 miles for each section. We got to choose which we would do first, and we picked the bike.

The bike was smooth and pretty fast in most spots. We chose to go clockwise around the course, and we emphasized the benefit of Forbidden Drive whenever we could, backtracking at times to gain an advantage of simple nav and accentuated speed. The nav was perfect and we flew around the course finishing it in just over an hour, leaving us with a load of time for the trek.

The foot section was rather smooth and fast as well. We had a bobble with AA, where I also fell down a hill and smashed my tailbone. This slowed me down a few steps, which was happily welcomed by Kevin. We also struggled with CC, as I was only aiming for it off of a small jig in the trail which was tough to locate in actuality. We spent 15 minutes looking for it before finally finding the small geocache. Our trip to the northern part of the course was simple but long, although we did come across a section of road that was mapped by no longer existed. This only cost us about 5 minutes, but it looks pretty silly on the gps track. We did well to nail EE, which was giving a number of other teams fits, and left DD with only U left to get. It was a full 5k trek out and back to the finish, but we did it in just over 30 minutes.

It's always nice to be the first team back, even more so when you've finished the whole course. I also really enjoyed pushing hard and going fast.

Thanks Rootstock for another wonderful day of events!!
