I told some of the juniors this at Big Woods, but in addition to getting snippets of songs stuck in my head while orienteering, I sometimes get a word stuck in my head. I don't know why, it's not like I'm choosing to.
Today, it was 'serendipitous.' Exotic multisyllabic words like that sometimes just echo in my head in the woods for no apparent reason. I passed Will, who I know started 8 minutes before me, as I exited 2. I didn't think much of it. I saw him again as I exited 7, and over the next two or three controls I started to consciously think to myself 'not serendipity, manufactured luck.' And I kept repeating that, 'manufactured luck.'
I was a little thrown off when I saw Matthias near 11, my only big mistake of the day (plus bad route choice to 7, didn't even consider going W on the trail as I should've). After that, though, I think I really started to buy into manufacturing my own luck, you know like all those sports cliches where it's like the harder you work the luckier you get. I just kept repeating in my head 'manufactured luck.'
Anyways it was just kind of cool that this was one of the times that I was able to override that random word echoing in my head, and I really felt like I was creating my own luck out there. Also funny to note that my two streaks of quickest controls were immediately after seeing Will. Thanks, Will <3
